Last Legion [Blu-ray]Last Legion [Blu-ray]
Directed by Doug Lefler
Availability: Usually ships in 1 to 3 weeks

Import Blu-Ray/Region All pressing. THE LAST LEGION is a reason to rejoice for action fans who prefer their battle scenes to be composed of flesh and blood rather than megabytes. Based on the novel by Valerio Manfredi, this is a sword-and-sandal epic that deftly weaves a tale of the fall of the Roman Empire with myth and magic, giving us plenty of swordplay and liberal doses of knowingly corny humor. In Rome of 476 A.D., 12-year-old Romulus Augustus (Thomas Sangster) is to be crowned emperor at the same time that barbarian king Odoacer (Peter Mullan) arrives with his fierce warriors--led by brutish Wulfila (Kevin McKidd)--to slaughter everyone in sight. With his family dead, young Romulus is captured and taken, along with his teacher--the wise mystic Ambrosinus (Ben Kingsley)--to the island of Capri. Learning that the Byzantine Empire has offered a safe haven for Romulus, surviving Roman soldier Aurelius (Colin Firth) teams up with fierce female warrior Mira (Aishwarya Rai) and sets out to retrieve the boy. Deceit on the part of the Byzantines, however, necessitates that Aurelius change direction for Britannia, home of the last safe outpost for Romans.

In an era where every thrill-ride film strives to be louder, bloodier, and more boundary-stretching than the next, THE LAST LEGION shows a charming, family-friendly restraint. The cast, led by two veteran English actors (Kingsley and Firth, the good guys), two fine Scottish actors (Mullan and McKidd, the baddies), and a Bollywood superstar (Rai, grand in her action sequence), is clearly having a blast. With rousing, elaborate (and bloodless) battle scenes, liberal humor, and a neat twist at its conclusion, this is old-fashioned B-movie making in the best sense of the word.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Of the countless documentaries about the Nazi Holocaust of World War II, Inheritance is surely one of the most deeply personal and emotionally resonant. Oscar-winning documentarian James Moll (The Last Days) collaborated on several Holocaust history projects with Steven Spielberg (including ongoing work with Spielberg's Shoah Foundation), and as he was preparing the documentary "Voices of the List" for the Collector's Edition DVD of Schindler's List, he became aware of Monika Hertwig, a soft-spoken German woman, born in 1945, who had learned as a teenager that her late father was Amon Goeth, the monstrously homicidal commandant of the Nazis' Plaszow concentration camp in Poland, memorably portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in Spielberg's Oscar-winning 1993 film. Hertwig had never confronted the awful truth of her father's history until she saw Schindler's List, and Inheritance focuses its intensely human drama on Hertwig's eventual meeting with Helen Jonas-Rosenzweig, a former maidservant to Goeth and one of the Holocaust survivors whose testimony is included in "Voices of the List."

Linked by a horrible legacy of pain and suffering, these two extraordinarily compassionate women agreed to meet on the grounds of Plaszow (which includes Goeth's former villa, where Helen lived under conditions of slavery), 60 years after Goeth's post-war execution. Their encounter was captured by Moll on high-definition video, and the slickly produced Inheritance follows their brief journey together as they confront the truth about Goeth's murderous legacy. The result is a film that offers considerable healing power for all Holocaust survivors, but it's almost uncomfortably intimate as Moll's cameras eavesdrop on these admirable women and their very personal quest for closure. This is an extraordinary film that deserves the widest possible audience, but it also feels occasionally intrusive, and the music score (by Argentine composers Andras Goldstein and Daniel Tarrab) is unnecessarily lush and manipulative. Those minor caveats aside, Inheritance provides a spiritually satisfying and deeply emotional experience, even as it raises darker questions about the source of Amon Goeth's evil, the mysterious passivity of his wife Ruth (Monika's mother), and the deep psychological scars of the Holocaust, which continues to haunt survivors, perpetrators and their families well into the 21st century. --Jeff Shannon

Review
[And] it is that raw, unfiltered, uneasy, uncomfortable intimacy that makes this, as one audience member later remarked, much more than just another Holocaust movie. Here, in these women's tears and twisted smiles, in their attempt to make sense of events beyond comprehension are the living wounds of history -- terminal and undeniable. --The Los Angeles Times

About the Director
James Moll's credits include The Last Days, for which he won an Academy Award in 1999, as well as Price for Peace, hosted by Tom Brokaw. In addition to his filmmaking, Moll established and operated The Shoah Foundation with Steven Spielberg for the purpose of videotaping Holocaust survivor testimonies around the world.

Ping Pong PlayaPing Pong Playa
Directed by Jessica Yu
Average customer review:

Jessica Yu's Ping Pong Playa is that rare film unlikely to appeal to a director's usual fan base. Best known as a documentary filmmaker, her first feature targets a completely different audience. In it, co-writer/production accountant Jimmy Tsai plays Christopher "C-dub" Wang, a Los Angeles-based, basketball-obsessed, Chinese-American slacker. Chris shares his enthusiasm for urban culture with African-American best friend J.P. Money (Khary Payton). J.P., in turn, has been taking Chinese-language lessons, so the cultural exchange doesn't just run one way. Unfortunately for Chris, his family lives for ping-pong, a pursuit in which he has little interest. When his mother (Elizabeth Sung, The Joy Luck Club) and brother, Michael (Roger Fan, Better Luck Tomorrow), are injured in a minor traffic accident, however, they recruit him to help run their supply store and to teach table tennis at the local community center. Since Chris has just lost a gig hawking cell phones at the mall, he's in no position to decline. Along with some Asian-American youngsters, both Chinese and East Asian, who hunger for a cool role model, Chris changes from the world's laziest human being into something that almost resembles a respectable member of society. With its antic humor and underage hijinks, Yu's self-proclaimed popcorn comedy offers more mainstream appeal than her inventive documentaries In the Realms of the Unreal and Protagonist (she won the Oscar for non-fiction short Breathing Lessons). If the loud-mouthed Chris can be fairly off-putting at first, her affectionate representation of his multicultural world rings true. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
