Finally a BARBARA STEELE double feature of some quality!!!5
Both THE LONG HAIR OF DEATH (one of my favorites) & AN ANGEL FOR SATAN (very rare & first time on DVD) have now been released as a double feature. An Angel For Satan (Barbara Steele's last Italian horror film) was never released in the US, but at least we have English subtitles. The film seems more of a supernatural thriller than a horror outing. These films do not appear to have been remastered, but the original sources are much better than expected. The quality of An Angel For Satan is very good-- nice clear picture. The Long Hair Of Death is far better than any other versions out there so far. I was very pleased with this double feature--some perfectionists may not be. Thank goodness THE SHE BEAST is being remastered soon (although Steele is not in it much). Now lets get the rest of Horror Queen Steele's work remastered. Only Black Sunday, Castle Of Blood & now the She Beast have been properly restored.

Review for Founding Fathers:

The four programs from the History Channel in this set profile America's Founding Fathers, noting right at the outset they were a "mismatched group of quarrelsome aristocrats, merchants, and lawyers." The story of how these disparate characters fomented rebellion in the colonies, formed the Continental Congress, fought the Revolutionary War, and wrote the Constitution is told by noted historians, and the production is enhanced with beautifully photographed reenactments as well as intelligent use of period paintings and engravings. The story begins with Samuel Adams and John Hancock in Boston, whose protests against British taxation led to the Boston Tea Party. Moving on to the Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia, the brilliant delegates from the South, particularly George Washington and Thomas Jefferson appear on the scene, and the story is told of how an improbable cohesion between the colonies began. Other main characters, including Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, appear in turn, and each of the major participants is portrayed in a biographical profile. How these men all came to act together, despite the stark differences in their backgrounds and temperaments, becomes the main thread of the story. They were all quite human, as the historians who appear in interviews remind us. Some of them drank too much, some had illegitimate children, some owned slaves, and some could hardly get along with anyone. Yet these men with complicated private lives worked together and performed heroically. This is an intelligently rendered and captivating look at the men who formed the American nation. --Robert J. McNamara

Review for Founding Brothers:

The political wrangles of a fledgling country may sound dull compared to the drama of a war, but the early history of the United States only gets more fascinating as the Revolutionary War is left behind. Founding Brothers, a documentary from the History Channel, examines the struggle to not only establish democracy, but to give it the economic strength and governmental structure that will allow it to survive and thrive. George Washington grappled not only with politics, but with questions of style and propriety--how should a president, as opposed to a king, behave? Understanding the conflicts between Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson will illuminate ideas that have shaped the government of the U.S. ever since. Founding Brothers provides a wealth of portraits and illustrations from the time, as well as discreet dramatizations, that bring the rise of party politics to life, humanizing these historical figures with tales of the scandals and squabbles they faced as well as their political achievements. An excellent introduction to the roots of the American experiment, and a bracing illustration of what Jefferson meant when he said of the presidency, "No man will bring out of that office the reputation which carried him into it." --Bret Fetzer

Review for Washington the Warrior:

He was "first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen," and Washington the Warrior puts the emphasis on the beginning of that equation. The military career of George Washington is the well-chosen focus of this History Channel documentary, which will probably surprise the casual history buff. It gives the fascinating story of Washington's youthful ride into the Ohio territory to deliver a message to the French, a defining moment (and one that made Washington a celebrity after his diary of the journey was published). The film strongly suggests that the young Washington was in over his head in the early battles that followed, and that his career might well have ended after he led a British debacle at Fort Necessity, a stumble at the start of the French and Indian War. Glossing lightly over GW's years as a gentleman farmer, the doc picks up again with Washington's takeover of the Revolutionary army (he showed up at the Second Continental Congress dressed in his military uniform, leaving little question about his intentions) and the tenacious years that followed. The approach here is basically an illustrated lecture, with Stacy Keach intoning the story of Washington, and experts (mostly sounding enthralled with Washington's life) providing context. Meanwhile, armies of reenactors march through their paces in pretend battles. Jackson Bolt plays the mature Washington, with Shea Patrick as the younger version--and how refreshing to see the carved-in-marble George Washington as a guy in his twenties. CGI effects are a big boost here, and the location work is often flavorful. The re-creations have the flat, unconvincing quality of many such things--nobody ever gets their uniforms dirty--but the life being described is an important one, and the approach is foursquare. --Robert Horton

Review for Benedict Arnold: A Question of Honor:

The most sullied figure of the American Revolution receives partial redemption in Benedict Arnold: A Question of Honor. Produced for the A&E network, this factual drama reveals the lesser-known circumstances of Arnold's dishonor, beginning in 1777 and chronicling his fall from greatness. The conquering hero of Saratoga and other victories of the Revolution finds himself in an impossible predicament, his allegiance torn between his British loyalist wife (Jane Brennan) and his paternally devoted commander, George Washington (Kelsey Grammer), as his Colonial detractors cast him into a tragic no-win scenario. Authentically detailed and blessed by playwright William Mastrosimone's poetic period dialogue, Benedict Arnold successfully explores the personal and political facets of a great soldier's downfall. Aidan Quinn's expressive melancholy perfectly suits his title role, and Grammer transcends Frasier, lending appropriate gravitas--and some physical resemblance--to his portrayal of America's future president. Like A&E's earlier film The Crossing, this is compelling historical drama, entertaining, intelligent, and emotionally complex. --Jeff Shannon Review for The Crossing: Every American knows that George Washington crossed the icy Delaware River in the War of Independence, if only from Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze's famous 1851 painting. The made-for-cable-TV historical drama The Crossing, scripted by Howard Fast from his novel, corrects at least one piece of historical invention--Washington did not stand and pose for the occasion of Leutze's portrait--but, more importantly, it frames the event in the real-life drama that made it a decisive moment of American history. Jeff Daniels makes a fine General George Washington, the quiet, dignified, and increasingly desperate leader of the volunteer Continental Army. By December 1776, six months after the Declaration of Independence was signed, the tired and hungry army had retreated to the far banks of the Delaware River, a mere fraction of the original 20,000-strong force. Knowing that defeat means the end of the revolution, Washington takes the offensive in a dangerous surprise attack that turns the tide of the war. Like the sprawling Civil War epic Gettysburg, The Crossing takes one incident of the Revolutionary War and digs into the whys and wherefores that make it vital history. It lacks scope and spectacle--major battles appear more like modest skirmishes--and lapses into patriotic fervor at times, but it brims with rich historical detail and comes alive with the stories of officers, soldiers, and a very human George Washington. --Sean Axmaker

Average customer review:

With a plot stripped from a 1969 letter to Penthouse Magazine, Viva tells the story of Barbi, a na ve housewife who sets out to discover the seedy underbelly of the sexual revolution. With her best friend Sheila in tow, she encounters everything from prowling cougars, grandmotherly brothel madams and lesbian supermodels to full-blown orgies. Toss in a gay hairdresser, a funk-gasmic soundtrack and some surreal animated and musical sequences and you ve got one smoking hot slice of nouveau cult cinema. Biller's truly amazing accomplishment in Viva comes courtesy of her uncannily authentic design. It doesn t emulate the spirit of those swinging times, it's possessed by them. Just one whiff of the cheap cologne, one glance at the rugged polyester, and you ll have to submit to this killer escapade. Fab Magazine

Viva5
Viva is one of the most original films I've seen in years. Its excessive portrayal of the 70s sexual revolution, accompanied by its campy production design, transported me back to my wild misspent youth. The deliciously saturated colors were exquisitely captured by the utterly phenomenal cinematography of C. Thomas Lewis. The incredible lighting and lensing were spot-on for the genre, and added the convincing edge needed for this homage to sexploitation. One eye-popping scene after another culminated in an orgy of visual delight certainly befitting the diva Viva. If for no other reason buy this dvd to delight in the kind of beautifully lit color that has been absent from recent movie making for far too long.

Einstein: The Real Story of the Man Behind the TheoryEinstein: The Real Story of the Man Behind the Theory

Directed by Ken Druckerman
Average customer review:

This is the extraordinary story of Albert Einstein and his decades-long battle to prove his Theory of General Relativity amid the violence of war and his tumultuous personal life.

For centuries, Isaac Newton's Law of Gravity stood untouched. But in 1915, Einstein attacked Newton with a mind-boggling theory: Gravity is not pulling you down ... instead, massive bodies like the Sun and the Earth are bending space and time around you, pushing you down. During a total solar eclipse, he predicted, that warp in space-time should reveal itself. Fiercely competitive astronomers raced each other to exotic locations to see if Einstein was right... or wrong. Hardships, weather, and war foiled their expeditions again and again. When, against all odds, a blazing glimpse was finally captured, the humble Einstein exploded into a global icon.

This rich DVD from HISTORY® moves beyond theories and the cult of personality to breathe new life into the man, not the myth.

Customer Reviews

Fascinating theories and personal details - clearly explained5
I first saw part of this movie on History channel and now I own it. Before this movie, I had trouble seeing the forest for the trees when it comes to Einstein. But this movie explains the four most prominent theories (from his miracle year in 1905) using stunning graphics and explanations from contemporary physicists. This is my favorite part of the movie.

But, there is a broader story being told about how a great man can almost be overlooked by institutional thinking. And, how relatively mundane things like clouds and international disputes (okay wars) can threaten to extinguish some of the most important scientific advancements ever.

Einstein is not portrayed as a saint here either. His personal details both charming and somewhat crass are all woven into the story of how one of the greatest minds of history unlocked and proved some of the most perplexing problems to date.

I love it. If you care anything about Einstein, get it. It is not overly technical and it is fascinating on all dimensions.

Cat DancersCat Dancers

Directed by Harris Fishman
Average customer review:

Unlike anything else you've seen, Cat Dancers is the mesmerizing and haunting tale of the husband-and-wife team who first engaged the world in the art and tragedy of exotic cat entertainment. This strikingly candid film lays bare the circus-like lives of Ron and Joy Holiday, childhood friends who improbably pirouetted from dazzling careers as world-renowned adagio ballet dancers to performing with an incredible, if dangerous, cast of lions, tigers, and jaguars.

A remarkable glimpse at the uncanny connection between animals and humans, this stranger-than-fiction documentary also touches on some very human passions. Marriage takes on a new twist when the youthful, charismatic Chuck Lizza joins the Holidays as a performer. The introduction of Jupiter, a rare white Bengal tiger, to the act turns out to be a fatal mistake.

Skillfully directed by Harris Fishman with a moody score by String Theory and the very personal narration of Ron Holiday, Cat Dancers includes unadulterated joy and unspeakable loss, as well as hauntingly bewitching footage of the felines both on and off stage, resulting in a provocative and intoxicating walk on the wild side that you won't soon forget.

DVD features: Deleted Scenes; Interviews With Exotic Cat Experts; Filmmaker Biography

A message from Harris Fishman, Director/Producer of Cat Dancers:

"I spent over 7 years working on this film and since have traveled the country showing it at dozens of festivals. Cat Dancers was fortunate enough to win the Special Jury Prize at SXSW. And now that it has been completed, aired on HBO and is officially out in the public and the blogosphere, well, this is an enormously satisfying feeling.

I will always be grateful to Ron Holiday, the main character/survivor in Cat Dancers, for his willingness to go on this personal journey with me. He was brave, courageous and always willing to answer the hard questions and for this I am forever thankful.

I hope those who watch the film will put aside their judgment of what is perceived to be "normal" and embrace the complexities of love, loss, and alternative lifestyles.

I hope you enjoy the DVD and the extra interviews with people from Ron's life."

Memory4
I wasn't crazy about the way the filmmakers decided to "distress" so much of the older color film, to make it look incredibly old. Or worse, as when Ron remembers the tragic day his second loss took place, the film seems splotched with blood--a sadly cheap and gimmicky effect.

Filmmakers seem to take Ron's account of "Cat Dancers" pretty straightforwardly, but I would have preferred a more authoritative approach. Couldn't they find anyone else to interview for the movie (outside of Chuck's mom, who appears only on audio)? How old were Ron and Joy anyhow? We get only vague references to actual dates, but I'm wondering were they actually born in the 1920s? If so, they were amazingly old when they encountered the young, virile, crush magnet Chuck Lizza. Yes, it would have been nice if some disinterested party had described the career of the Cat Dancers in terms we could understand. Were they really bigger than Siegfried and Roy? Seems hard to believe. According to Ron, they were already big stars when they met Tennessee Williams in Key West shortly after the Broadway premiere of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (what a prophetic title!)--so that must have been 1955. In the 1970s they're still looking pretty good, but man oh man, if that's what happens to you when you spend your life feeding cats in Florida, lord preserve us from that harsh sun! I'm glad I'm lost in the fog in San Francisco. Ron and Joy had great bodies but those faces were like dried up hamburgers.

I like Ron, though after watching "Mr. G" on the Australian series HBO imported this autumn "Summer Heights High," that colored it a bit for me since Ron seems so much like the fictional, and horrid, Mr. G (a drama teacher at the fictional Oz high school). It is a tragic story and nothing will change the bitter ending, but I think Ron might have been better served by a director willing to put his story into some context, instead of making it GREY GARDENS II.

A DOCUMENTARY SO INCREDIBLY TRUE;YOU HAVE TO SEE OVER AGAIN!5
THIS WAS TRULY ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL DOCUMENTARIES I HAVE EVER SEEN OF OR READ. THIS STORY SHINES A LIGHT ON A ONCE BIG "FAMILY" OF "3" HUMANS AND THEIR CAT ANIMAL PETS THEY THOUGHT WERE THEIR CHILDREN.I LOVED RON AND JOY HOLIDAY "BEST" AS SIMPLY DANCERS.IT WAS SOME OF THE MOST CAPTIVATING,JOYOUS,AND LOVING I HAVE SEEN.THEY JUST SEEMED TO GENERATE A CALM AND LOVING SPIRIT THROUGH THEIR DANCING.I THINK THIS WAS THEIR CALLING.RON APPEARS TO BE A OF SOMEWHAT "MANIPULATIVE" NATURED.LIKE"GONNA GET MY WAY NO MATTER WHAT",BUT A GUESS TO BE IN CHARGE YOU HAVE TO HAVE A LITTLE PERSUASIVE TO GET ANYTHING DONE.I THINK HOWEVER WHEN CHUCK CAME INTO THE TRIANGLE THIS CAUSED THE MARRIAGE TO TWIST AND BEND TO RHE EXTREEMS.I THINK JOY MAY HAVE LEANED MORE TO A NORMAL RELATIONSHIP THAT SHE PROBABLY WAS ABLE TO NOW GET FROM CHUCK.BEING THAT SHE DID GROW WITH SUCH STRONG RELIGIOUS BELIEFS IN HER CHILDHOOD;THAT RON HAD CAUSED HER TO SWAY FROM.ANIMALS DO CHOOSE THEIR MASTERS;AND I GOT THE FEELING THAT RON WAS A BIT JEALOUS OF THE RELATIONSHIP "JUPITER" HAD WITH CHUCK.RON APPEARED TO WANT TO BE THE "BEST" OF THE TRAINERS AND NOTHING LESS.IT IS AS ONE OF THE PREVIOUS REVIEWERS SAID QUITE "FRIGHTENING"TO TRY TO "ASSIGN HUMAN EMOTIONS TO WILD ANIMALS" AND EXPECT THEM TO RESPOND AS WE HUMANS DO.I THINK THEY TRULY TAUGHT THEIR PETS TO FEEL JOY AND SORROW "CRY!"HOWEVER THESE WILD ANIMALS ARE "NATURAL" PREDATORS AND WOULD TAKE TRULY MORE THAN A LIFE TIME TO CHANGE THAT.IF YOU SPOOK OR SCARE THEM IN ANY WAY OR FASHION;THEIR NATURAL INSTINCT "KICKS" IN FOR THAT MOMENT AND THEY ATTACK TO PRESERVE LIFE "THEIR LIFE".KNOWING NOTHING IN THE BEGINNING ABOUT WILD ANIMAL TRAINING THEY DID QUITE REMARKABLY.THEY WERE THE"BEST"OF THE BEST.THERE IS A LOT TO LEARN FROM THIS FILM.TRIAL AND ERROR IS HOW HUMANITY AND OUR WORLD HAS DEVELOPED THOUGH TIME.WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES.YOU DO;I DO;AND AS RON SAID THEY DID.HOWEVER SOMETIMES THE STAKES INVOLVE HUMAN LIFE.WE JUST LEARN FROM THEM.RON,JOY,AND CHUCK BROUGHT A LOT OF JOY MIXED WITH SORROW INTO THE WORLD.I'M SO GLAD RON IS ABLE TO SHARE HIS BIOGRAPHY WITH US.BECAUSE NOW HE CAN TEACH OTHERS THINGS HE NOW KNOWS;THAT WE SIMPLY DON"T!WE THINK WE DO;BUT ASK RON.HE CAN TELL US ,NOW.GET THE VIDEO.BUY THE BOOK.YOU'LL SEE FOR YOUSELF.IT'S AN "A+"ALL THE WAY!

RAW emotional story told straight from the heart!!!!5
WOW! I couldn't even pause this DVD to get a snack or have a bathroom break! Ron Holiday tells the story of his life with Joy, his wife of over 40 years and later partner Chuck Lizza. Included is a cast of tigers, leopards, jaguars, etc. that played a role in their onstage show career. They were big before Siegfried and Roy!

NOTE: There's a VERY tragic end to the story. I will no spoil it by telling it in this review!

Ron's real life story telling sincerely had me in tears many times. It's beautifully told and his love for Joy is so plainly seen!!!! His dedication to her and their animals is an inspiration! There's a special place in Heaven for Ron Holiday!!!!

Dear Ron...if you ever read this; I hope you make it to Thailand!!!! I'll pray for you! You are a lovely man.....a real man with a HUGE heart!

God Bless you!!! I'd love to be a member of AOTPOG!

In the course of two pivotal days one past and one present both will confront their own personal demons and seek in each other the healing powers of forgiveness.

Customer Reviews

Parallels and Parallax5
TAKE is yet another superb film that suffers from lack of promotion and PR. It is a compelling film, intelligently written and directed by Charles Oliver (his first venture in both roles!), contains some of the most subtle and powerful cinematography (by Tristan Whitman) to partner in the intensity of the story telling, a musical score by Roger Neill that enhances the work without drawing attention to itself, and a cast of absolutely first rate actors offering some of their most brilliant performances to date. For the sophisticated film lover this little treasure will likely echo the question "Why didn't we hear about this fine work?"

Oliver elects to present this story of two disparate characters whose lives of quiet desperation cross at a moment in time that alters the emotional growth of each - an event that is the parallax for the viewer just when the parallel lives of these challenged people have been explored by means of a nonlinear method of storytelling. Ana (Minnie Driver) works at multiple menial jobs to augment the small teacher's salary of her husband Marty (David Derman) in order to support the Special Ed school their challenged son Jesse (Bobby Coleman) requires. Concurrently we meet Saul (Jeremy Renner) whose expenses in caring for his ill father and his gambling debts drive him to performing criminal means of finding money. For much of the film the audience is unaware of the connection between these two people whose pasts have collided and who both must come to grips with a situation that almost defies description. In many ways the drive of the story is a sensitive journey toward understanding the need for forgiveness and the necessity of finding a greater meaning to the absurdity of life with all of its random acts of violence.

Minnie Driver gives a delicately multifaceted performance as the mother, a performance as memorable for her extended moments of frozen silence (captured so exquisitely by cinematographer Whitman) as for her episodes of emotional explosion. 11-year-old Bobby Coleman proves to be one of our finer young actors before the camera today. Jeremy Renner, usually assigned to parts of evil men such as his portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer, his role as the despicable villain in NORTH COUNTRY, THE ASSASINATION OF JESSE JAMES..., etc), here manages to hold the viewer's compassion despite the deeds he commits. Adam Rodriguez shines in an important cameo role as the prison chaplain attempting to help Renner's character find meaning, Rocky Marquette stuns as a cashier victim in a brief but sensitively nuanced appearance - the list of credits is long. But the main kudos must go to Charles Oliver for writing and realizing this brilliant little film. If this is his first outing as a writer and as a director, we have in our midst a sleeping giant! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, January 09

Live in AfricaLive in Africa

From Shout Factory

In 1974, when then-heavyweight champion George Forman was preparing to fight former world champion Muhammad Ali for the historic "Rumble in the Jungle" in Zaire, Africa, another stage was being set, that of concert festival. Considered to be one of his most memorable performances ever, B.B. King shone brightly to the audience of over 80,000. Friday the 13th Part 2 [1981] [Blu-ray]Friday the 13th Part 2 [1981] [Blu-ray]

Directed by Steve Miner
Average customer review:

As bad as Friday the 13th, Part 2 is, it's a work of art in comparison to the rest of the Friday the 13th flicks that came afterward. This installment officially introduced us to Jason Voorhees as the killer (if you remember Drew Barrymore's fatal phone quiz in Scream, you know that the killer in the first Friday the 13th was actually Jason's mother), and made the slicing and dicing even more generic. Survivor Alice is dispatched within the first 10 minutes, and we're left with plucky Ginny (Amy Steel, doing a fairly decent Jamie Lee Curtis impression) to do battle with the monstrous Jason. Ginny's part of a another group of horny teenagers (less intelligent as well as less attractive than their predecessors) who try to resurrect Camp Crystal Lake five years after the initial murders--a pretty mean feat, considering this movie was made only a year after the first one. Being a smarty-pants child-psychology major, Ginny tries to outwit the dim Jason, and at one point dons the bloody and moldy sweater of Jason's late mother (which is more disgusting than any of the killings beforehand) in an attempt to confuse the masked killer. Jason may not be the brightest bulb on the tree, but the only one who's going to pull the wool--or in this case, the burlap--over his eyes is Jason himself, who wears a sack with one eyehole throughout the movie to hide his deformed features (he finally found his way to a sporting-goods store and his trademark hockey mask appears in the third installment of the series). Directed by Steve Miner, who also helmed the next Friday the 13th film (in 3-D no less) as well as the more reputable House, Forever Young, and Halloween: H20. --Mark Englehart

Great!5
Justin you are misinformed. PAL does NOT matter for blu-ray. I have bought several uk blu-ray releases that aren't available in the u.s.(Batman, Batman Returns, The Goonies) They all work perfectly in my us lg blu-ray player. It is my understanding that nearly all blu-rays are formated for all regions. PAL/NTSC make not difference for blu-ray, only for standard dvd. I am buying these uk friday the 13th releases since i am impatient for a us release and because the extras are better than those on the the newly released deluxe edition dvds. ...and yeah yeah i know its not the uncut version like part 1...get over it.

Canterbury's Law: The Complete SeriesCanterbury's Law: The Complete Series

From Sony Pictures
Average customer review:

Emmy® Award winner Julianna Margulies stars in Canterbury's Law, "a lightning-paced legal drama that roars with a feisty thunder" (Matt Roush, TV Guide). Cunning, shrewd and tough as nails, defense attorney Elizabeth Canterbury (Margulies) takes on the risky cases no other lawyer could possibly win in this edgy and "highly entertaining" (John Griffiths, US Weekly) six-episode DVD collection. Whether she's battling the city's ruthless deputy attorney general, her independent-minded associates or her long-suffering husband Mat (Aidan Quinn), Elizabeth fights for justice no matter what the cost!

Customer Reviews

An entertaining legal drama but because the network cut it short, you're really left with no closure 3
A legal drama with an edge, "CANTERBURY'S LAW" was a series that had so much potential but was cut too short with only six episodes in the DVD complete collection.

The drama which aired during the Spring of 2008 featured Emmy Award Winner Julianna Margulies ("ER") as the feisty defense attorney Elizabeth Canterbury. A woman who seeks justice for the people she defends even if it means breaking the law.

Running the law firm Canterbury & Associates, she is joined by her partner Russel Krauss (Ben Shenkman) and her two attorneys Chester Grant (Keith Robinson) and Molly McConnell (Trieste Kelly Dunn). They take on cases which seem impossible and a grand slam for the District Attorney but Elizabeth Canterbury has always outbest the Deputy Attorney General Zach Willliams (Terry Kinney).

But Elizabeth's personal life is anything but good. Her marriage to her husband Matt, a law professor has gone down the drain since their son was kidnapped. Three years ago, she took her toddler Sam to the playground and answered her phone for business and next thing you know, she lost sight of him and they don't know if he is dead or alive.

Despite being successful as a defense lawyer, her life has been spiraling down hill. She has become a drunk after hours, she has been having an affair with Frank Angstrom (James McCaffrey) and because her husband has held his pain of feeling that she is responsible for their son's kidnapping, he wants to move on with their lives and declare him dead. But Elizabeth believes her son to be alive. And thus, her marriage life is in shambles.

To make things worse, because she has broken the law in order to win a case, now she is being investigated by the District Attorney and Grand Jury for jury tampering.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

"CANTERBURY'S LAW" is featured in 1:78:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. The video quality is similar to a lot of dramas that are on DVD which has a bit of grain.

As for the audio, the audio is English 5.1 (Dolby Digital) and the series is primarily a dialogue-driven drama series with the occasional rock music that is played during certain scenes. But the dialogue is clear and I had no problems hearing the audio.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

There are no special features on this DVD unless you count "previews" as one of them. Previews are for "Damages", "The Lazarus Project", "Rescue Me" and "The Shield".

JUDGMENT CALL:

"CANTERBURY'S LAW" is a legal drama that had a lot of potential and Julianna Margulies did a really good job as Elizabeth Canterbury, a defense lawyer who is strong, feisty and a woman that no one wants to mess with but to show that behind that tough demeanor, her personal life is just in shambles.

With this series coming from Denis Leary and Jim Serpico who are responsible for "Rescue Me", I expected the potential for something explosive for the first season. But it's really unfortunate that FOX canceled the series with only six episodes.

I definitely gave this series a try and I really felt that "CANTERBURY'S LAW" had so much potential and what urked me so much is that by watching these six episodes, there was an ongoing storyline about Elizabeth hoping that her kidnapped son is still alive. And to know that with no conclusion, we're left with an open ended series with no closure.

It's very unfortunate that the creator/director Dave Erickson was never given the opportunity to finalize the series. Even if there was one last episode to tie up loose ends, at least it would have been some sort of closure to the series and its characters. It's a shame to watch these characters taken to such highs but then taken to the lowest of low's and that glimmer of sunshine will never come.

I actually enjoyed Julianna Margulies performance and it was great to see her play this type of role. After watching each of the six episodes, I really got into the main characters (the partner and attorneys at Canterbury's law firm) and seeing this battle of wits between Canterbury and the Deputy Attorney General.

I enjoyed "CANTERBURY'S LAW" but with only six episodes, the series definitely had potential. Unfortunately, the network canceled it too quickly and thus, the series never had any true closure to the series storyline or its characters. And as entertaining the episodes were, you are left with wanting more but knowing that there is no more. What a shame!

As seen on Masterpiece Theatre

Semi-retired, with wine glass in one hand and cigarette in the other, former ’60s rock singer Maggie Sheridan (Helen Mirren, Prime Suspect, The Queen) seems resigned to life on a crumbling country estate, ruminating about her past. But everything changes when a botched robbery leaves her friend Sir Charles Stafford dead and one of his prized paintings missing. Determined to retrieve the masterpiece and find the killer, Maggie plunges into the murky underworld of the art trade. Posing as a wealthy Polish countess, she sets off on a treacherous path from Ireland to London to New York and back again. Meanwhile, Sir Charles’s troubled son, Sebastian, embarks on his own path of discovery. Where the two trails meet, life begins to imitate art to deadly effect.

Oscar&reg-winner Helen Mirren delivers a tour-de-force performance with strong supporting turns by Iain Glen (Adam Bede), Lesley Manville (All or Nothing), Michael Maloney (Truly Madly Deeply), and Franco Nero (Camelot).

DVD FEATURE INCLUDES biography of Helen Mirren.

Customer Reviews

She Enjoys Painting the Town Red5
"Painted Lady," is a British mystery/crime thriller/drama, made as a television mini-series by Granada for the United Kingdom's associated independent television stations (ITV). It was shown here on the Public Broadcasting System's "Masterpiece Theatre" in 1998 and 2000. It stars Oscar, Emmy-winning, and highly-admired actress Helen Mirren (Prime Suspect - Complete Collection (10 Disc Set) ; The Queen), in a part that might have been written for her, and probably was, by the talented Allen Cubitt(Prime Suspect 2). It was helmed by the equally-talented Julian Jarrold (Brideshead Revisited; Becoming Jane). And Mirren herself, who undoubtedly had quite a lot to do with this production, takes an Associate Producer credit on it; as does Rebecca Eaton, of Boston Station WGBH, "Masterpiece Theatre's"long-time Executive Producer. It's a two-part series that runs approximately 198 minutes, and, wonderfully enough, it's got subtitles, too.

Mirren gives every sign of having a ball playing Maggie Sheridan, former 1960's British blues crooner, now semi-retired, living in the lushest green Irish countryside, with wine glass in one hand, cigarette in the other, and boy toy not far. She's got a "diamond" or whatever stud in her nose, and is at ease in her old hippie gear. Until, that is, a robbery goes very wrong, leaving her friend and benefactor Sir Charles Stafford (Ian Cuthbertson,Gorillas in the Mist) dead, one of his most valuable paintings stolen. Maggie wants to find her friend's masterpiece, and his killer, so she insinuates herself into the art trade. She poses as a wealthy Polish countess, and she's off to glamorous auctions, hotels, restaurants, and such, in London and New York. Gone is the hippie gear, in favor of smart suits and signature jewelry. Suspense mounts, particularly after Maggie hooks up again with her close friend, Sir Charles's deeply troubled son Sebastian (Iain Glen, Adam Bede). Other strong supporting turns are contributed by Lesley Manville (All Or Nothing) as her sister Susie Peel; Michael Maloney (Truly Madly Deeply) as her brother-in-law Oliver Peel; Franco Nero (Camelot)as Robert Tassi,an important Italian-American New York art dealer, and John Kavanagh (The Tudors - The Complete First Season), as Michael Longley, an Irish gangland chief. The mystery centers on a real painting by the real 17th century Italian Artemisia Gentileschi, the first woman to make a name for herself in the heavily male-dominated art field, and a true feminist hero.

It so happens that once I met friends for a drink in the bar of New York's Algonquin Hotel, a theater district landmark made legendary for the wit of its "Round Table," of carousing writers and performers, Dorothy Parker, Alexander Woollcott, the Marx Brothers and company; and there was Mirren, enjoying a drink or three, and chatting amiably with her neighbors. She appeared to have been enjoying painting the town red; even as she appears to be enjoying painting a couple of towns red in "Painted Lady." I enjoyed watching her, and expect you will, too.

DIR EN GREY, who recently landed at the top of Billboard's Heatseekers chart, have planted their roots firmly in every region they have traversed, reaching out of Japan to the rest of the world and participating in world class festivals like Rock am Ring, Rock im Park, Wacken Open Air, Family Values and more. They have had the honor of sharing stages with globally renowned bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Deftones, Korn, and Linkin Park. Now, fans in North America can get a glimpse behind the scenes with 'A KNOT OF', DIR EN GREY's first North American DVD release. The DVD follows the band through three long mettle-testing years on the road, giving fans a window into DIR EN GREY s unique world.

Customer Reviews

Not as great as Macabre's tour dvd or Blitz 5 day Kingdom3
I was excited to get a tour dvd by Dir en grey that wasn't $90, and it came with a STICKER!
But my excitement quickly diminished when I watched this dvd. It has poor audio quality and video quality. A lot of the clips I can hardly hear Kyo singing (or screaming) over Shinya's drums or the guitars.
The other two tour dvds I have are packed with more backstage footage, which makes the DVD worth buying. In this DVD, very little footage backstage was provided. There was a clip of when Kaoru and Toshiya was on tv, but it was only 10 seconds long!

Very disappointed. I kept it to support the band, and have some lulz at Kyo's tantrums on stage (even if you can't really hear him)

Bellydance Egyptian Style - The Baladi - 2-DVD SetBellydance Egyptian Style - The Baladi - 2-DVD Set

Directed by Ranya Renee
Average customer review:

Created by Ranya Renee, New York City-based star performer and instructor of Arabic-style bellydance, Bellydance Egyptian Style: The Baladi is a comprehensive program that will immerse you in the beautiful world of traditional Egyptian dance music, soulful and spirited baladi improvisation, and delicious, dynamic moves! This 5-hour-long 2-DVD set covers the structure, rhythms and musical flavors of typical baladi progressions, teaches the essential technique and dance vocabulary of baladi, and provides drills for developing your own improvisational practice.

Bellydance Egyptian Style: The Baladi is the first program to combine instruction in core Egyptian dance technique with a wealth of detailed cultural information and tools for learning to interpret the music and for daily dance practice. The program is a valuable resource for bellydancers of all levels of experience as well as for dance instructors.

Baladi is the social dance style of the Egyptian people, often featured in a special section of the traditional bellydance show. This video focuses on the taqsim baladi a style of improvisation that starts slow and gentle, building to a climax of exciting rhythms, faster steps and shimmies. During a live music demonstration of baladi progressions, Ranya analyzes the structure, common features and stylistic differences between men's style (tet) and women's style (awadi) baladi dancing, and offers a step-by-step explanation of what is happening at each transition in the music.

Master accordionist Nabawy provides an introduction to baladi music and explains the different melodic styles, and the drummers demonstrate some of key rhythms used in the baladi. You will also receive an introduction to the concept of maqamat, or Arabic musical modes, that are the source material for taqasim, the art of melodic improvisation.

The technique section is organized by style and type, so you can match the appropriate movements and traveling steps to each part of the baladi progression: From the slow, fluid taqsim, through the sekkat accent breaks, and on to the maqsoum-based rhythm sections and the fast ingerara section that transitions into the drum solo. This framework enables you to develop the instinct you need to select authentic movements that correctly match the music, recognizing the essential features of melody and rhythms. Ranya gives guidance for beginning or developing your improvisation practice, no matter your level of experience as a dancer.

With looped recorded music drills created specially for this program, Ranya gives you the tools for a rigorous baladi dance practice while simutaneously honing your listening skills. The format of the drills is an organic flow, preserving the improvisational nature of the baladi so you learn in the way Egyptians learn, by watching and following along. Absorbing the feeling of baladi naturally will help you to improvise with more confidence on your own. The looped music repetitions allow you to review key movements over and over as you build an intimate familiarity with the musical nuances, and condition your physical dance response to them. DVD options allow you either to dance through a full baladi piece or to work on isolated sections of a baladi, focusing on short portions of music to drill your steps. With all the drills, Ranya provides voiceover commentary to call your attention to melodic and rhythmic motifs, or to remind you of technique pointers.

The program also includes extensive sections on posture and muscle work for Egyptian dance, framing and transitions, arms and hands practice flow, and cooldown stretches.

High quality DVD has appeal to beginners and advanced dancers5
My wife knows the instructor, so I got to see a preview copy of the DVD. I teach W. African drum and dance and am NOT a belly dancer myself. So consider that as you read on...

I was impressed by several things about this 2-DVD set:

1) The production values were outstanding. They shot on HD, and did a great job with lighting, sound, and editing. That makes it very easy to watch and absorb.

2) The instruction is tremendously detailed. I was surprised by how in-depth Ranya went into the cultural nuance of the movement and music, so it has great appeal to beginners and more advanced dancers.

3) The musicians are world class, so you will be dancing to traditional music done by people who care a great deal about the authenticity of their art form.

I've been involved in teaching traditional W. African music and dance for 17 years, and had a career in video production, so I've got high standards for this kind of project.

Luckily for belly dance students around the globe, the instructor and producers also have high standards, and have turned out a DVD worth serious study.

The Lovers' Guide Interactive1
I didn't enjoy watching this DVD at all. It has completely destroyed my body confidence. I wish I'd never set eyes on this DVD.

Sex education done well.4
A good dvd if your young or old.The subject matter is tackled well and none of this movie is smutty.nice touch with the camera angles.

Education at all angles5
This is truly a great piece of sex education for any one. During the commentary you can switch between him/her or a third person view which allows you to see from different views what is happening during sexual intercourse. Don't look at this as a dirty porn film because it is not that at all. It is purely for educational use and is filmed in a very professional and respectful way. The extras are good such as how the guide was made and the troubles the crew had to go through in making it, as well as a few quizzes that try to profile you and then tells you to watch certain chapters to work on your love making skills.
This is a great extra if you have any of the Lovers guide dvd's or just an intro to the dvd collection. If you have enjoyed any of the 'A girls guide to 21st century sex' episodes, then you will enjoy this.
You and your partner wil not be disappointed.
