Karol: The Pope, The Man
Directed by Giacomo Battiato
Average customer review:
This highly acclaimed feature film on Pope John Paul II was filmed on location in Italy and Poland. Focusing on the papacy of John Paul and the tremendous impact he had on the Church and the world, Karol: The Pope, The Man stars actor Piotr Adamczyk in a deeply moving portrayal of the beloved pontiff. It is the powerful true story of a charismatic spiritual leader who helped bring down Communism, renewed the life of the Church, greatly impacted youth worldwide with love for Christ, and a Pope who reached out to other religions and world leaders with a message of peace and love. Also stars Raoul Bova (Saint Francis), Michele Placido (Padre Pio: Between Heaven and Earth) and Adriana Asti as Mother Teresa. The beautiful film score is by legendary film composer Ennio Morricone.
This DVD contains the following subtitles;Spanish and English
16 page booklet by Carl Olson with study questions, biography of Pope John Paul II, and resource list.

A JOY TO WATCH
I ordered this film from Canada because you can't get the second part in the UK and it was totally worth while. The Pope, The man is wonderful and a little more accurate than A Man Who became Pope which took liberties with the early part of JP's life. I was profoundly moved by many aspects of both films-I will treasure this DVD.
Both films are a beautiful, moving tribute to a man who taught love and practiced what he preached. I think they are wonderfully acted by the title roles- I cannot recommend them highly enough. Pope Benedict himself gave them a favourable review but you don't need to be Catholic, Christian or even religious to recognise the goodness of JPII and see the gift he had with people- especially youth.
This film captures the essence of who Karol was and what motivated him in a time of oppression and fear. It puts the message of John Paul's papacy 'DO NOT BE AFRAID' into a new light when you see how hard he must have struggled not to let fear conquer him in his life.
In 'KAROL; THE POPE, THE MAN' the actors reprise their roles - Piotr Adamczyk is utterly superb in portraying the Pope to the point of his death. This young actor really does deserve praise. Together these are truly great films that inspire and uplift like the man himself.
I hope as many people as possible get the chance to enjoy them

An inspiring film....suggesting that ALL religions focus upon their similarities and NOT their differences...
This film ran on Bill Moyers Journal on 26 Dec. 2008...a remarkable film that focuses upon the idea that religion(s) and mankind should make an effort to realize that all religions and peoples have much in common, and good reason to explore the positive likes and ignore the negative dislikes that cause wars and so very much suffering. The world would certainly be a much better, more positive place if this could be put into practice.

Disappointing main event but the rest are great
Anderson "The Spider" Silva returns to fight Patrick "The Predator" Cote in a Middleweight championship fight. Silva is on a 7 fight win streak going into this fight and Cote is on a 4 fight win streak. This was the most disappointing fight of the night because of how it ended. I won't hide anything in this review. Silva and Cote battle it out for 2 rounds in which ends up being Silva's longest fight in the Octagon. In the opening minute of the 3rd round, Cote injures his leg and Silva wins via tko (injury). Not only was the ending disappointing, but Silva's performance was also. For the most part, he just danced around for 2 rounds and showed off. I came to see a fight, not a dance.
There were 2 really great fights before this though. Alves fights late replacement for Diego Sanchez, Josh Koscheck. Alves was coming off 2 huge knockout wins over Parisyan and Hughes and was considered #1 contender for the belt after Fitch. The fight was a great 3 round battle that had me on the edge of my seat. The second good fight was Sean Sherk vs Tyson Griffin. Sherk was coming off the loss to BJ Penn but nothing held him back from earning Fight of the Night honors and fight of the year award for this fight. Tyson Griffin also looked impressive in this fight and delivers all he's got for 3 grueling rounds.
This event is also worth purchasing to see a huge upset with Werdum vs Black House student Junior Dos Santos. This was a brutal knockout that no one saw coming. Almost as surprising as Evans vs Liddell.
The Gray Maynard vs Rich Clementi fight was a dud and I kind of expected it to be.

This ain't just another Rose Bowl win
This rules, end of story. The Rose Bowl is one of the coolest traditions ever, and this also caps off our 3rd straight Rose Bowl win (we have played four in a row, but lost to Texas in 2006).
Hands down, this game rules. Joe Paterno's excellent Nittany Lions team made Sanchez's performance even greater, as their high ranked defense was no match for Sanchez. Furthermore, Daryle Clarck was no match for Brian Cushing and Rey Maualuga. Yeah, classic DVD for a classic performace.

Customer Reviews
Far from great, but its okayThis event featured some fights that had the potential to be really really awesome fights. The only one that is worth watching twice is the Paul Taylor vs Chris Lytle fight. That fight was awesome!
Too bad it set us up for a long night of poor performances and decisions. Luiz Cane vs Sokoudjou was a pretty good fight but Soko just looked like crap(I guess Cane is just that good though). Vera vs Jardine let everyone down in so many ways. Basically you got 2 guys coming off bad performances, Jardine with his highlight of Wanderlei Silva knocking him out cold and Vera coming off a lackluster win over Reese Andy and 2 losses to Tim Sylvia/Fabricio Werdum. So you would think both this guys would come out and try to prove something that they are still here to stay and are better then ever(and they even said it in the pre-fight interviews)....well this fight showed everything but that. I don't see either of these guys getting anywhere near the belt.
UFC 89 features a main event between Michael Bisping and Chris Leben. Bisping, coming off 2 big wins at his new weight class(middleweight) looks to take out Chris The Crippler Leben. Not the greatest of main events, probably shouldn't even have been a co-main event, but it was live in his hometown in England so the UFC tried to make them happy I guess.
Pre-lims include:
Welterweight bout: Akihiro Gono vs. Dan Hardy
Heavyweight bout: Shane Carwin vs. Neil Wain
Lightweight bout: Jess Liaudin vs. David Bielkheden
Lightweight bout: Sam Stout vs. Terry Etim
Lightweight bout: David Baron vs. Jim Miller
Lightweight bout: Samy Schiavo vs. Per Eklund

Cyclops
Directed by Declan O'Brien
Average customer review:
It is the pinnacle of the Roman Empire, a time of mighty gladiators, lusty women, and a ferocious one - eyed monster that slaughters those foolish enough to enter his forest domain. But the corrupt Emperor Tiberius has a plan to please the bloodlust of the people: Capture the creature and unleash him in the arena against his condemned slaves, including wrongfully imporisoned general Marcus Romulus. Now the ultimate battle between man and beast is about to begin... and Rome will tase the full furty of hell unleashed.

Cyclops-a great flickTake a journey back in time, when Cyclops ruled the land. Roman citizens were not safe, herds were randomly decimated, and fear reined supreme...that is, until the great Caesar himself rid the land of the dangerous creatures!
Except for one. The last Cyclops roams the forested area around Rome, dining on unsuspecting thieves and brigands. A hungry trio spies a drying rack of wool, and pays for their dishonesty with their lives. Cyclops rips through two men, leaving one behind to warn the Emperor Tiberius. Corruption runs rampant through the Roman empire, and Tiberius, with his maniacal pattern of decision making and ambition, has run the gauntlet until his only the most violent `victory' games will do. He sends Marcus Romulus to capture Cyclops for use in the games. An enraged Cyclops kills many of the troops, yet Marcus emerges as a hero, inciting the jealousy of the Emperors' nephew. Popularity is no weapon against blind ambition, and the victory games pit man against Cyclops, friend against friend, and ultimately, freedom against tyranny!
This is one amazing movie. The CGI employed on Cyclops is remarkable, just as the costuming/props used on the Centurions is. A picturesque digital reconstruction of Rome serves as a suitable backdrop for this freedom motivated film. If there is any problem with the production, it is the Victory games pit used. I am not sure that an Emperor as fanatical as Tiberius is depicted as would settle for a small arena, but it does work in the film very well. Another realistic element is that of the format of the games with small side battles climaxing in a major brawl. The background element of the slaves being used in the games instead of building the nephews' villa addition is also factual. In times of war, households were cleaned out of slaves for war efforts and `freely' given when any Emperor demanded it.
The casting of Eric Roberts as Tiberius is excellent, while Kevin Stapleton as the imprisoned General is a good foil. Roberts gives a performance that reminds me of the BBC I, Claudius strongly. Stapleton is rugged, and is a fitting Roman centurion.
Roger Corman gives us a film that is a good addition to any sand and sandal collection. Great DVD jacket too!
