University physicists Leonard and Sheldon know whether to use an integral or a differential to solve the area under a curve. But they don’t have a clue about girls. Or dating. Or clothes. Or parties. Or having fun. Or, basically, life. So when a pretty blonde named Penny moves in the apartment across the hall, the guys decide to get an education outside of the classroom. Boys, you have a lot to learn. With series creators Chuck Lorre (Two and a Half Men) and Bill Prady (The Gilmore Girls) concocting the right mix of logic and lunacy and stars Johnny Galecki (Roseanne) and Jim Parsons (Judging Amy) turning geekdom into Phi Beta fun, The Big Bang Theory is big on laughs. And life.

Superb5
Thank you Mr. Lorre and thank you CBS for picking this show up for a second season! Well written, funny, and for once, a show that has grasp of what it talks about when it introduces a science topic. Only complaint is a tad too much laugh track.

Smart and Funny Comedy5
I wasn't sure if I would like this show when I first saw the preview ads last summer. But after watching the first episode, I found myself watching every episode, and when I knew that I wouldn't be home, I would TiVo it. The ensemble cast is phenomenal, and the chemistry between the actors really makes this show work. I have been waiting to hear that it was renewed for the next television season. It is definitely a must-own for my DVD collection.

Smart funny television5
Finally a TV show that doesnt insult your intelligence or feels the need to preach or dumb itself down for the masses. The characters are unique, well developed and always entertain, the writing is imaginative and funny. My wife and I both love this show and hope its around for a long time to come!

Writers Strike Discount??? Helloo??? Amazon??1
What's with this price? We are paying per-episode and runtime, right? Yikes. The sale price at $39 and the original price at $59?????

Great show... possibly the only one I watched last year... but come on* If writers strike isn't enough... the whole we're-probably-in-a-recession thing should score some discount points.

Back to the basics4
In season 4 of DH we see the show going back to the basics, to the thing that made fans love DH: the friendships. The friendships of Lynette, Susan, Bree and Gabrielle, as well as each individual character, were tested over and over again and they endured. It was this quality of enduring friendship amongst women that makes this show so good.

Season 3 dealt with each women independently, barely interacting with the other friends and thus we lost that which made the show worthwhile, their interactions. Season 4 takes another route and shows the women provide each other a strong support system. Lynette relies on her friends and family to go through cancer, Bree deals with faking a pregnancy, Susan must deal with her marriage with Mike and Gabrielle must decide between Carlos and Victor.

We also see the introduction of another character, Katherine Mayfair (and of course, her many secrets which deserve to be a character all of their own). She was such an excellent character that I instantly liked her, secrets and all. Katherine was a former resident of Wisteria Lane and a friend of Susan's. She has a ton of secrets and a way to challenge each and everyone of our Wisteria Lane ladies.

Tornadoes, blackmail (tons of blackmail), ex-husbands, drugs, maniacs, and tons of humor. This is one of the best DH seasons to date.

Review for all 3 seasons...so far of SUPERNATURAL5
Before I discuss the show in some depth, I want to state that this tv series' episodes are often more enjoyable the 2nd or 3rd time around - same as other popular paranormal shows - especially the X-Files. Hence having said that, buying the season sets is a must for all who like/love this show.

SUPERNATURAL is a very unique tv series in that it shows two brothers, often in each other faces fighting over the most trivial of things (e.g. Sam's watching with a disgusted face of Dean gargling post toothbrushing and examining the "not squeezed properly" condition of the toothpaste tube), while bonding over surviving another episode of horrors/drama often with life or death situations. The first is common with nearly every sibling relationship and that is refreshing to see in this unique tv series rather than commonly seen in sappy other tv shows.

SEASON ONE was rough in spots due to the interaction of the young actors, but followed by a VERY strong, better acted second season. Yet the storyline really made the show develop in a strong direction. The SECOND SEASON'S strongest appeal often was with the choice songs that complimented the them of various episodes...somewhat dated songs at times (some made me feel real old for I remember the songs when they first came out) but appropriate nonetheless. The true bonding of the brothers really becomes apparent in Season Two. The THIRD SEASON - all actors finally have a well-oiled fit/working relationship that allow the episodes to move in a more realistic fashion. My favorite episode (and it is hard to really pick only one) is the where Dean dies in over a hundred different ways while Sam repeats the same Tuesday over and over again. The episode is funny, emotional with brotherly love, and the determination by Sam to stop the cycle of seeing his brother die day after day. The premise of repeated time has a common appeal for I've seen it in other shows with interesting outcomes (e.g. Star Trek Next Generation, X-Files, and most recently in the relatively new series Eureka - to name a few). In all three seasons, I particularly enjoy the banter between the brothers over the course of a beer or two at the end of the day - definitely more down-to-earth characters than in many other sci-fi/paranormal tv series. Added to this are the wildly unique, often bizarre hotel rooms (e.g. the vibrating bed, the funky 50's style rooms, the ick - I don't want to walk barefoot in that motel room)...and finally the car - definitely a classic for Dean's character even though I have the feeling that Sam loves the car too.

So no fancy hotel rooms, older vehicle, interesting music selections, down-to-earth brothers that enjoy beer in the course of their work as "Hunters" of paranormal activity, and finally the bonding and fighting between brothers add to a very realistic series while covering the appeal of the activities that cannot be explained without believing in the supernatural. Almost every episode is provided with a recap of earlier episodes to help viewers recall particular scenes pertinent to the episode to follow. However, with the DVDs, you have the option of skipping the intro and delving right into the episode. The commentaries are often the best for Jared (Sam) and Jensen (Dean) are naturally funny. A few of the outtakes or gag reel are hilarious and worth watching several times. After watching a few of these, I had to rewatch the episode in which these gags occurred and it really made me enjoy the show more. This brings me to the subject of added extras - it is nice to see these already in the DVD season sets rather than waiting for them with later DVD editions.

As for the show's future - I hope to see more music (season 3 was dismal when compared to season 2's music) and a continuation of the brother bond and rivalry. These make the show. I also hope the show continues longer than the 4 or 5 seasons that have been suggested. I believe this show fits nicely within the cult following of other shows such as: Angel, X-Files, Buffy VS, and maybe a few other paranormal/sci fi shows.

Don't let this season get you down!5
Despite being the shortest season *Shakes fist at Writer's Strike* Supernatural is the only show on television that leaves me begging for more.
I have never been a Sci-fi fan (I'm a closet horror fan though *shrugs*) but this show, oh man, this show blows me away. The closeness of the brothers (Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are the two hottest actors on screen today) and the mythology are two of the biggest reasons why I watch this show.
Supernatural has something for everyone whether you enjoy it for the thrill, amazing cinematography, dialogue or eye candy.
Can't wait for Season 4!

Worst Season Yet2
I remember watching the first season religiously. I went to any length necessary to see episodes that I missed. The show was great! Then came the second season where Dean was an emotional wreck and Sam turned into a wimp. Okay, fine, it's the second season - it will get better. Third season comes and it's pretty good...right up until the writer's strike and all of a sudden I don't get the other 8 episodes promised, leaving plot holes and an overall disappointing season. Then, they want to charge the full price of a regular season for 2/3 of a season provided.
I don't pay full price for 2/3 of a haircut.
I don't pay full price to see 2/3 of a movie.
I don't pay full price for 2/3 of a pizza.
I won't pay full price for 2/3 of a crappy season, even if it is my favorite show (it's a sliding scale).

Amazon.com
"I bought a car. Turned out to be an alien robot. Who knew?" deadpans Sam Witwicky, hero and human heart of Michael Bay's rollicking robot-smackdown fest, Transformers. Witwicky (the sweetly nerdy Shia LaBeouf, channeling a young John Cusack) is the perfect counterpoint to the nearly nonstop exhilarating action. The plot is simple: an alien civil war (the Autobots vs. the evil Decepticons) has spilled onto Earth, and young Sam is caught in the fray by his newly purchased souped-up Camaro. Which has a mind--and identity, as a noble-warrior robot named Bumblebee--of its own. The effects, especially the mind-blowing transformations of the robots into their earthly forms and back again, are stellar.

Fans of the earlier film and TV series will be thrilled at this cutting-edge incarnation, but this version should please all fans of high-adrenaline action. Director Bay gleefully salts the movie with homages to pop-culture touchstones like Raiders of the Lost Ark, King Kong, and the early technothriller WarGames. The actors, though clearly all supporting those kickass robots, are uniformly on-target, including the dashing Josh Duhamel as a U.S. Army sergeant fighting an enemy he never anticipated; Jon Voight, as a tough yet sympathetic Secretary of Defense in over his head; and John Turturro, whose special agent manages to be confidently unctuous, even stripped to his undies. But the film belongs to Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, and the dastardly Megatron--and the wicked stunts they collide in all over the globe. Long live Transformers! --A.T. Hurley

TRANSFORMERS is AWESOME!!!5
This is an awesome action-robot film based on some action figures! I watched this movie some time last year, then three months ago, back when I was a senior in high school, our English teacher let us watch this, and I'm glad she did because I forgot how cool it was! Sam Witwicky buys a car that happens to be an Autobot named Bumblebee. Sam is introduced to other Autobots, named Optimus Prime, Jazz, and others. (Our dog's name is Jazz!) The Autobots have to save the world and stop the evil Decepticons, and their leader, Megatron. There is a lot of action, gun-play, and robots fighting, if you love that, and a little comedy, you'll love TRANSFORMERS!!!

A Must See5
I am more of a comedy lover but this action packed flash from the past movie was awesome. I have to admit I would not normally choose a move of this genre but I was glad I watched it. The effects are amazing and it is worth sitting in front of the tube for a couple of hours (unlike most movies today).

A little different from the seasons before4
I am a ruthless Office junky. I'm the geek with the ring tone on my cell. I have a Dwight T-shirt.

The reason I share this is so that you know I say the following in love: This wasn't the best season. It was good, but not great. I'm not sure if its because Pam and Jim are finally together or because of the fact the light heartedness has faded a bit but somewhere the show changed. Of course, that happens with any show thats on for longer than 2 seasons.

I would imagine they couldn't keep dragging up the same type of jokes forever. I get that. However, once and awhile going back to some of the original material would be great. What I loved about this show was that I could identify with it. I still can but not as much.

The dinner party episode was amazing and there were a few others that were good but the amount of change that was squeezed into a season got to be overwhelming. Jan and Michael break up, Dwight and Angela break up, Ryan is the new boss and then has his own "personal" issues and the list continues.

Still an above average show and still fun to watch in my opinion. The plus side is this would be a great season to watch and get kind of "caught up" if you are just starting to watch The Office.

"Did I Stutter?"5
I thought that it was a great season, apart from the six month gap. The price is steep for the shortened season, but Im sure that a mega- chain store will have it on sale when it comes out. So Id rather patiently wait to save a few bucks, rather NBC try to rip us all off.

stop complaining.5
I have been hearing a lot of whining about how this season lacks in episodes. But think about it, 5 out of the 15 are hour long episodes. This season is just a tad bit shorter in time than the 2nd season and the 2nd season costs the same. Also it really doesn't matter how long it is, because this was the best season ever! Definatly buy this, you will not be disapointed in the slightest. But wait, there's more! Before you pre order, or buy this, I recomend getting the exclusive gift set. I know Best Buy has one, and Target will to. Last year, It was totaly worth the 10 extra bucks. Just do me a favor and buy this. Because I love seeing a normal person like who I used to be, turn into a crazed Dunderhead like I am now.

The Batman Curse?

The Dark Knight, the latest in a new series of films based on the popular DC Comics character Batman, has had the good fortune of grossing almost $400 million dollars through this past weekend. That good fortune has not rang true for some of its actors.
The Dark Knight received much fanfare months before its release due to the tragic death of Heath Ledger, who plays the latest incarnation of the Joker in the film. Many critiques have noted that this was Ledger's best work in an illustrious, albiet sadly cut short acting career.

Ledger was found unconscious in his apartment,in New York City on January 22, 2008. Emergency crews arrived soon after but were unable to revive him. His death occurred while The Dark Knight was in post production.

The Dark Knight was released on July 18, 2008 in North America and grossed $67,165,092 on its opening day, beating the previous record of $59.8 million held by Spider-Man 3(2007). Through this past weekend it has grossed over $397 million dollars.

On July 22, 2008, Christian Bale, who reprises his role as Batman appeared at a London police station by and was arrested in connection with an alleged verbal assault on his mother and sister. After being held for more than four hours, he was released on bail, pending further investigation. He has denied these allegations.

In the latest incident, Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman was injured in a car accident late Sunday night scene in Tallahatchie County in the Mississippi Delta. He is currently in a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He is listed in serious condition.

These incidents are obviously not linked, but we as a society like the intrigue of curses and I must feed the fire some. It should also be noted the the film is dedicated in part to Ledger and to technician Conway Wickliffe who was killed during a car accident while preparing one of the film's stunts.

Box Office Analysis for Tropic Thunder

Tropic Thunder finished in first place yesterday with a paltry sum of $1,897,596. It's the end of the summer as we know it. How do you feel?

The dog days of August mean that temperatures are scorching, kids are back at school and few people are interested in going to movie theaters. If this point is up for debate, simply consider that Tropic Thunder's "winning" total was the smallest for the number one film on a Monday since April 28th when Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay earned $1,318,461. The good news is that Babylon A.D. is opening in theaters this weekend and with such lofty praise from its director, it's certain to be a blockbuster!

All kidding aside, we are moving toward the time of year wherein movie releases are...well, let's say of questionable quality. Okay, I know what you're thinking about August, so let's say even more so. September is generally the worst month on the schedule not named January...and January has been catching up in recent years. October is only marginally better unless you don't like horror movies, in which case it's much, much worse. Having said all of that, the plan this year is for Daily Box Office Analysis to continue into the Fall, but I'm probably going to have to come up with some ideas on how to make it more interesting. My sparkling wit and personality can do only so much for titles like Ghost Town and Bangkok Dangerous. But we'll cross that bridge when we get to it and see Nicholas Cage's inconsistent hairline staring back at us.

Until then, the story this week is combination of Tropic Thunder and four new openers, two of which were rejected more soundly than the musical career of Heidi Montag. That's going to make for a slow news week. The only truly interesting topic - for those of you who love Anna Faris the way I do, anyway - is the performance of The House Bunny, which finished second yesterday with $1,503,894. With a fiscally pragmatic budget of just under $25 million, a four-day total of $16,037,596 is best case scenario for Sony. As I said in this week's Monday Morning Quarterback, I also feel it's time to acknowledge that Faris, while completely typecast, has become something of a box office draw in ditzy blonde roles. In a way, she has taken the Christina Applegate character from Married with Children and made an entire career from it.

Other than Tropic Thunder's 13 day total of $67,737,511 and The House Bunny, this is a grim week. Death Race, the second biggest opener, fell 64% from Sunday's $3,543,995 to Monday's $1,266,000. Is anyone here surprised that it's showing early signs of flaming out quickly? That's like predicting that The Rocker (already out of the top 10) was going to bomb. The same can be said of The Longshots, which is also out of the top ten after only three days. So, we have The House Bunny, the flameout of Death Race and two complete box office non-factors to discuss in upcoming days. Don't take this personally, but I'm not exactly cherishing our time together this week.

When in doubt, talk about The Dark Knight. That's what I always say and have for almost two months now! Still in fourth place after 39 days in release (and upwardly mobile this week at that), it earned $1,183,256, down 61.6% from Sunday's $3,077,188. Week over week, it is down 44.0%, which is higher than I had hoped would be the case as it continues to make a respectable run at Titanic's mark. Unfortunately, it needs Mamma Mia! numbers (down only 28.2% Monday over Monday) instead of what it is actually doing. On the plus side, a running total of $490,600,141 means it will become the second release to cross the $500 million barrier sometime this week. I'm projecting Sunday but Saturday is an outside possibility. It is 81.7% of the way to the iceberg movie's $600,788,188. After 39 days in release, Titanic was at $276,501,108, only 56.4% of what The Dark Knight has done in the same time frame.

Overall revenue for the top ten yesterday was a pathetic $9,127,541. This is less than The Dark Knight made on its own on its 12th day in release. We are down 33.3% from last Monday's $13,690,081 and fading fast. By the way, your eyes are not deceiving you on the point. That is a full $4.5 million in lost revenue in only seven days.

Amazon.com
As of its release in early 2007, Planet Earth is quite simply the greatest nature/wildlife series ever produced. Following the similarly monumental achievement of The Blue Planet: Seas of Life, this astonishing 11-part BBC series is brilliantly narrated by Sir David Attenborough and sensibly organized so that each 50-minute episode covers a specific geographical region and/or wildlife habitat (mountains, caves, deserts, shallow seas, seasonal forests, etc.) until the entire planet has been magnificently represented by the most astonishing sights and sounds you'll ever experience from the comforts of home. The premiere episode, "From Pole to Pole," serves as a primer for things to come, placing the entire series in proper context and giving a general overview of what to expect from each individual episode. Without being overtly political, the series maintains a consistent and subtle emphasis on the urgent need for ongoing conservation, best illustrated by the plight of polar bears whose very behavior is changing (to accommodate life-threatening changes in their fast-melting habitat) in the wake of global warming--a phenomenon that this series appropriately presents as scientific fact. With this harsh reality as subtext, the series proceeds to accentuate the positive, delivering a seemingly endless variety of natural wonders, from the spectacular mating displays of New Guinea's various birds of paradise to a rare encounter with Siberia's nearly-extinct Amur Leopards, of which only 30 remain in the wild.

That's just a hint of the marvels on display. Accompanied by majestic orchestral scores by George Fenton, every episode is packed with images so beautiful or so forcefully impressive (and so perfectly photographed by the BBC's tenacious high-definition camera crews) that you'll be rendered speechless by the splendor of it all. You'll see a seal struggling to out-maneuver a Great White Shark; swimming macaques in the Ganges delta; massive flocks of snow geese numbering in the hundreds of thousands; an awesome night-vision sequence of lions attacking an elephant; the Colugo (or "flying lemur"--not really a lemur!) of the Philippines; a hunting alliance of fish and snakes on Indonesia's magnificent coral reef; the bioluminescent "vampire squid" of the deep oceans... these are just a few of countless highlights, masterfully filmed from every conceivable angle, with frequent use of super-slow-motion and amazing motion-controlled time-lapse cinematography, and narrated by Attenborough with his trademark combination of observational wit and informative authority. The result is a hugely entertaining series that doesn't flinch from the predatory realities of nature (death is a constant presence, without being off-putting).

At a time when the multiple threats of global warming should be obvious to all, let's give Sir David the last word, from the closing of Planet Earth's final episode: "We can now destroy or we can cherish--the choice is ours." --Jeff Shannon
