Mannequins and Mirrors4
I expected to be disappointed by this movie, but was pleasantly surprised. Kiefer Sutherland does a great job as the hero of this ghostly venture. Also, great effects and a few jump scares add up to an entertaining feature. Amy Smart does a good turn as the younger sister. And the finale where Sutherland goes mano a mano with an antagonizing spirit is well executed.

One matter of consternation is that the movie's visuals are really grainy. I don't know if this was intentional, or simply that my system is lacking. But I expected more from a Blu-ray version of this film.

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence [Blu-ray]Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence [Blu-ray]
Directed by Mamoru Oshii
Average customer review:

Mamoru Oshii's landmark Ghost in the Shell (1995) largely defined the cyberpunk genre and influenced the Matrix films in the U.S. The long-awaited sequel continues the adventures of Batou, Major Kusanagi's former assistant, who was left behind when she disappeared into the cyber-realm of the Net. With his new human partner, Togusa, Batou investigates a series of bloody murders involving gynoids, robots with sexual functions. The case leads them to the headquarters of the Locus Solus company, where Batou uncovers the evil secret behind the creation of the gynoids. Innocence includes some staggeringly beautiful CG images, especially a parade depicting characters from Chinese mythology. Oshii contrasts this glittering beauty with a Blade Runner-esque dystopia. But even his skill as a director can't disguise the fact that the underdeveloped story and flat characters are far less interesting than the opulent visuals. (Rated PG-13: graphic violence, violence against women, brief nudity, profanity, alcohol and tobacco use.) --Charles Solomon

Bandai does what Dreamworks should have done5
Really, the title of my review says it all. I already did a review on the DreamWorks DVD. Against my better judgment, I gave it a fairly high rating of four stars. This movie is so amazing, in the story department as well as graphics and music, that I hated to dock it too many stars because of DreamWorks flubs. But to be honest, I was one of the first writing nasty letters to DW and signing the on line petition to get an English dub. Some times I like watching anime in the original Japanese, sometimes I like to watch it in English. Whatever the case, not having an English dub was just plain laziness on DW's part, especially since the UK already had done it already.

But enough with the whining and complaining, because Bandai has finally been able to do what Dream Works was too lazy to do. We finally have an English dub for GitS.

As I said before, the story is great. It gets a little philosophical in some places, but that's what GitS has always done in general. The graphics are amazing, in DVD format but especially now that it's in high def Blu Ray. The music is more reminiscent of the first movie than it is S.A.C. That suits me since this is a continuation of the first movie.

The highest praise I could give this movie is that I originally gave the DW version four stars even with DW's bumbling of a release. The movie is just that good that it overpowered my anger of not having an English dub. Now that Bandai has fixed that problem, this movie is a solid five stars. Thank goodness Bandai was able to pry this movie out of Dream Work's inept hands and do what should have been done years ago!

Tokyo Gore PoliceTokyo Gore Police
Directed by Yoshihiro Nishimura
Average customer review:

In the near future, the Tokyo Police Corporation is locked in a bloody war with the "engineers." These genetically modified super-criminals can bio-fuse their open wounds with weapons, turning self-mutilation into a combat form. Ruka, the daughter of the police chief's murdered right-hand man, is now the top engineer hunter. With cold-blooded efficiency she cuts through the psychotic engineers and tracks down their home base, a truly bizarre fetish club. Nothing keeps her from her sworn duty, even when she finds out the truth behind her father's death.

Cronenberg meets Miike on Speed!.5
The title pretty much sums up what the film is all about. Depending on your taste, you will be either be delighted or disgusted by this but if you're a gore hound than you'll love it. When you start a film off with exploding heads, severed limbs that spray arterial blood like a garden hose and a chainsaw fight, you can be pretty sure that a film is going to be over-the-top and live up to the word gore in its name. If you've seen and liked Machine Girl then you should know that the same fx team also worked on Tokyo Gore Police, the film is kind of like a companion piece only it's alot better. In Toykyo Gore Police, Japan's police have been privatized and they are battling weird mutants known as "engineers" that are incredibly hard to destroy. Ruka (who naturally dresses as a schoolgirl and wields a katana) is one of the elite cops assigned to battle the engineers. There is actually a plot in Tokyo Gore Police and it has a few twists, but the movie is mainly interested in throwing as much blood and rubbery guts at the screen as possible. At one point there's a huge pile of limbs in the road; why? So a car can drive into it of course.

It's almost inevitable that the film will be compared to The Machine Girl, but other than the over-the-top gore they're really not that much alike. Tokyo Gore Police has very little sense of humor other than some rather funny commercial bits (which were handled by Machine Girl director Noboru Iguchi). It's a bit more gorier and more exploitative piece of work overall, still some viewers are probably going to laugh at just how over-the-top and ridiculous it gets, which is part of the fun. Tokyo Gore Police is essential viewing for anyone who loves gore or old-fashioned violent-as-hell non-CGI trashy low budget movies. It was definitely a cult classic, but be warned it was an extremely bizarre film with a couple of scenes that didn't exactly make sense but then again you don't watch a Japanese gore flick for it's storyline. What else can I say this stuff was just brilliant, I highly recommend this and two thumbs up!.........

Stargate - The Ark of Truth [Blu-ray]Stargate - The Ark of Truth [Blu-ray]
Directed by Robert C. Cooper
Average customer review:

Fans disappointed by the demise of the Stargate SG-1 television series after ten fruitful seasons will delight in The Ark of Truth, the first full-length movie to follow in the show’s wake. In fact, some will be more than pleased--they’ll be relieved. For not only does the 102-minute film offer an opportunity to enjoy the same likable characters, reliable effects work, superior writing, and other elements that made the series so appealing, but after season upon season in which viewers were left wondering how everything turned out, The Ark finally brings at least one cliffhanger to a conclusion: the storyline involving the villains known as the Ori, who dominated SG-1’s final two years. Our heroes (including Ben Browder as fearless leader Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, Amanda Tapping as the intrepid Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, Christopher Judge as the implacable alien Teal’c, Michael Shanks as the ever-resourceful Dr. Daniel Jackson, and Claudia Black as the irreverent Vala) have long known that the Ori are perhaps the most irresistible force they’ve ever encountered, in part because they are "ascended" beings who don’t exist in recognizable physical form (their spaceships do, and they're huge). But now the team faces an even greater threat: the Ori have set their sights on good ol’ Planet Earth. That’s where the Ark comes in; if the good guys can just get their hands on it, they hope this ancient artifact will effectively put the big, bad Ori, their minions, and their entire religion (known as "Origin") out of business. Of course, it ain’t easy. Both collectively and individually, the team will be severely tested, their task complicated not only by the Ori but by an arrogant, clueless government official whose meddling results in the return of the metallic, insect-like Replicators. There’s little doubt about how it will all turn out--after all, there’s at least one more movie already in the pipeline--but it’s all about the ride, and despite a few flaws (as was sometimes the case with the series, the script leans a bit too hard on exposition and techno babble), this one is lots of fun. Bonus features include commentary by writer-director Robert Cooper and others, a lengthy "making of," and a helpful "prelude" to bring the uninitiated up to speed. --Sam Graham

Old-school SG1 4
SG1 will never win major awards however it does deliver to its fan base which in the end is what it is all about. In this particular installment the Ori (the guys with snakes in their chests have been wiped out if you haven't been keeping up) are regrouping for a major offensive and it is up to SG1 to take a stand against them.

Rossellini's History Films: Renaissance and Enlightenment - Eclipse Series 14Rossellini's History Films: Renaissance and Enlightenment - Eclipse Series 14
Directed by Roberto Rossellini
Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours

In the final phase of his career, Italian master Roberto Rossellini embarked on a dramatic, daunting project: a series of politically minded televisions films about knowledge and history, made in an effort to teach, where the contemporary media was failing. Looking at the western world s major figures and moments, yet focusing on the small details of daily life, Rossellini was determined not to recount history but to bring it back to life, as it might have been, unadorned yet full of the drama of the everyday. In this selection of Rossellini's history films, Eclipse presents Blaise Pascal, the three-part The Age of the Medici, and Cartesius works that don t just enliven the past but illuminate the ideas that brought us to where we are.
