Brideshead RevisitedBrideshead Revisited
Directed by Julian Jarrold
Average customer review:

Inspired by the best-selling novel, Brideshead Revisited is a riveting drama of love, power and betrayal, featuring stunning performances by Academy Award(R) winner Emma Thompson (Best Actress, Howards End, 1992) and Matthew Goode (The Lookout). When the charming aristcrat Sebastian invites Charles Ryder to his family's estate, Charles becomes seduced by the opulent lifestyle of the Marchmain family, and by Julia, Sebastian's sister. As their romance deepens, repercussions follow, and Charles discovers that at Brideshead, love, money and power come at a price. It's a spellbinding story you'll want to revisit again and again.

Customer Reviews

A fantastic and beautiful film. There are differences from the novel and drama series but on its own, enjoyed it a lot!5
The film is quite epic as it's filmed in the UK, Venice and Morocco and there are so many beautiful locations indoor and outdoor, "Brideshead Revisited" is rather ambitious. Each person is cast pretty well with Matthew Goode, having to use less dialogue and reading his emotions through his facial expressions. Emma Thompson, Ben Whishaw and Hayley Atwell did a remarkable job with their role and overall, the film was a good story about family and the pressures of that time of socioeconomic times when people were judged by the places they lived, the clothes they wear and where religion was strictly enforced and sinful ways were intolerable. But to see how a family would change once Charles enters their life. Is he their poison or is he giving them a chance to live free?

WOW, finally here!5
I don't understand why the owners didn't publish this FANTASTIC series sooner.
I mentioned it to many people but no one has seen nor heard about this series. You have to be 'old' enough to remember :)

There is not much I can add to the previous comments, but one:
Buy it!
Don't even hesitate a minute.

Family That Preys (Widescreen Edition)Family That Preys (Widescreen Edition)
Directed by Tyler Perry
Average customer review:

Academy Award®-winner Kathy Bates (Lead Actress, Misery, 1990) and Academy Award®-nominee Alfre Woodard (Supporting Actress, Cross Creek, 1983) star as the matriarchs of two very different families being torn apart by greed and scandal in the contemporary drama Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys. The sixth feature film by Perry chronicles the inner workings of two families—one upper-crust and the other working class—that become inextricably linked by scandal. Wealthy socialite Charlotte Cartwright (Kathy Bates) and her dear friend Alice Pratt (Alfre Woodard), a working class woman of high ideals, have enjoyed a lasting friendship throughout many years. Suddenly, their lives become mired in turmoil as their adult children’s extramarital affairs, unethical business practices and a dark paternity secret threaten to derail family fortunes and unravel the lives of all involved. Alice’s self-centered newlywed daughter Andrea (Sanaa Lathan) is betraying her trusting husband Chris (Rockmond Dunbar) by engaging in a torrid affair with her boss and mother’s best friend’s son William (Cole Hauser). While cheating on his wife Jillian (KaDee Strickland) with a string of ongoing dalliances with his mistress Andrea, William’s true focus is to replace the COO of his mother’s lucrative construction corporation. Meanwhile, Alice’s other daughter Pam (Taraji P. Henson), a kind but no nonsense woman married to a hard working construction worker (Tyler Perry), tries to steer the family in a more positive direction. While paternity secrets, marital infidelity, greed and unsavory business dealings threaten to derail both families, Charlotte and Alice decide to take a breather from it all by making a cross-country road trip in which they rediscover themselves and possibly find a way to save their families from ruin in Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys.

A Must See5
From start to finish, this film will captivate the mind of the viewer enrapturing them into the lives of these versatile characters as they deal with the good, the bad, and the ugly. This is the best TP film to date...and that's saying a whole lot, since "Why Did I Get Married" was considered to be one of his greatest. The plot is incredible, and the twist and turns of this tale will bring about many unexpected outcomes. I loved this film, and I can't wait for this DVD to be released so I could enjoy it some more.

Swing VoteSwing Vote
Directed by Joshua Michael Stern
Average customer review:

Kevin Costner stars in Swing Vote, a clever, feel-good "landslide comedy winner. So funny and inspiring, you'll stand up and cheer!" (Pete Hammond, Hollywood.com). Bud Johnson's an ordinary dad drifting through life, caring about nothing except his overachieving daugther Molly. Trying to encourage him to get involved, Molly accidentally sets off a chain of events on Election Day that ends with the presidential race coming down to one vote -- Bud's. Comedic chaos ensues as Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Hopper, Nathan Lane, Stanley Tucci and George Lopez give all-star support in a witty and uplifting film that's "charming, funny, smart, touching and profound!" (Scott Mantz, Access Hollywood).

The ghost of Frank Capra is summoned up in Swing Vote, a populist comedy about the U.S. presidential election--because of an electoral deadlock--coming down to one man, one vote. Alarmingly (for the future of the world), that one man is Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner), a beer-swilling, newly-unemployed divorced dad in Texico, New Mexico. Bud's got a week to re-cast his flawed ballot, so the entire election process--including the two candidates, played by Kelsey Grammer and Dennis Hopper--descends on Texico for an orgy of campaign flapdoodle. Costner tries hard (probably too hard) to be the irresponsible good ol' boy, the kind of role he used to be able to handle with ease; by contrast, the composed Madeline Carroll, as his Little Miss Sunshiny daughter, comes off as a model of naturalism. Except for some pointed commercials, in which the candidates sell out their values to appeal to Bud's whimsical opinions on issues such as abortion and gay marriage, the movie's political bite is remarkably toothless. Both Stanley Tucci and Nathan Lane are in the groove as cutthroat campaign managers, and the movie is jolted out of its beery idle with a late one-scene performance by Mare Winningham. There's an interesting film trying to climb out of Swing Vote, but it needs Frank Capra to kick it into shape. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews

One Man, One Vote, Four Stars4
Think back to the 2000 election and the Florida recount. A long process that when all was said and done, declared George W. Bush as President of the United States. Now, imagine that instead of one state, the country's fate depends on the vote of one man. Highly unlikely it may seem, which is why it's the basis for a movie. That movie is "Swing Vote."

That one man is Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner), a big time drinker and recently unemployed. He really doesn't think too much about politics, but is smart and overly patriotic daughter Molly (Madeline Carroll) is very much into politics, especially the presidential race. Her patriotism and political concern pay off as she convinces her father to perform his civic duty. Due to a series of rather unfortunate events and a voting booth "malfunction" Bud's vote does not count leaving the presidential race in a tie, which attracts the attention of the media and the candidates.

"Swing Vote" does involve some serious issues; illegal immigration and unemployment just to name a couple, and it also brings up a serious theme, that every vote counts, but it does have its funny moments. Some campaign ads that are put together to entice our sole voter come to mind. The performances from Carroll and Costner were both very true to life. Costner as the boozing, unemployed single parent struggling to make ends meet and Carroll as the young daughter with too much weight on her shoulders.

A good movie is one that moves you, disturbs you or makes you think. "Swing Vote" has the capability to do all three, but ultimately it makes you think more than anything el

British sketch comedy that arrives like a zombie attack5
Matt Lucas and David Willams mastered fat suits, grotesque teeth and dirty, stringy hair to create a cast of social misfits that are as painful to look at as they are rudely funny.

Put the kids to bed. Forgive the laugh track. And you'll quickly discover the best sketch comedy isn't on "Saturday Night Live" or "Mad TV" but rather arrives like a zombie attack from Britain.

Of course, Lucas and Williams share a demented kinship with other outlandish comedies, including The League of Gentlemen and Trailer Park Boys as well as feature films Borat and Tropic Thunder.

In my Amazon review of Tropic Thunder I wrote, "You'll laugh but this movie isn't for the easily offended. Heck, even a few hard-to-offend viewers will cringe, too. A comedy hasn't had this much in-your-face political incorrectness since Blazing Saddles.''

Mel Brooks must be pleased to see so many comedians and sketch-comedy writers so willingly drop-kicking political correctness for a good, sometimes grotesque, laugh.

I encourage you to watch the original series, Little Britain: The Complete Collection, which is funnier than this American version in much the same way The Office - The Complete Collection compares with the NBC version, The Office.

Tess of the d'Urbervilles
From BBC Warner
Average customer review:

Ten years have passed since the BBC last produced Tess of the d’Urbervilles, then starring Justine Waddell, and this new four-episode miniseries based on Thomas Hardy’s Victorian novel does well, again, by sticking closely to the original plot. Gemma Arterton this time brilliantly portrays Tess Durbeyfield, a character whose blend of naiveté and sexual allure makes her a guy magnet. Arterton’s long, dark hair and fair skin alone are the model of Gothic beauty, and her acting imbues Tess with the sweetness that helps maintain viewer sympathies as Tess embarks on a road of endless hardship. As the story is chock full of heated drama, each hourlong installment shows how Tess endures drastic emotional and social life change, leaving one feeling both exhausted for her and craving to witness more of her strength. As far as literary characters go, Tess warns young women to the wild ways of men and inspires all to strive for honesty. The morality implicit to the story is made apparent in this BBC version, and leaves the viewer questioning the effectiveness of Tess’s stringent moral sense, especially by today’s different sexual standards. Tess, in 2008, seems permanently punished for something that not only was not her fault, but also that may be unfortunately more common than perhaps it once was, namely teenage pregnancy. Episode One launches directly into Tess’s early meeting of her true love, the seemingly heroic Angel Clare (Eddie Redmayne). But her family’s poverty trumps the crush; once her robust parents John Durbeyfield (Ian Puleston-Davies) and Joan Durbeyfield (Ruth Jones) discover their hereditary ties to the royal d’Urbervilles, they send Tess off to a mansion to inquire for work. It is there that she encounters the villainous predator, Alec d’Urberville (Hans Matheson), and the tensions between a story about an upwardly mobile lady and a lady doomed by fate begins to take hold. The loss of Tess’ child and Tess’ inability to gain respect following her un-Christian motherhood comprise the next two episodes’ story. In these, we witness women bonding against a society of men who judge Tess too harshly. There are her loving sisters, like Liza-Lu (Jo Woodcock), and the girlfriends who support her through her milkmaid career and worse. As Tess, however, reunites with Angel and agrees to marry him, tragedy is foreshadowed by her dearest friend, Retty Priddle (Emily Beecham), who withers from jealousy. The closer Tess comes to happiness, the more those around her suffer. Once Tess experiences an ultimate shunning, without giving away too much, dire circumstances prevail.

Episode Four reminds the viewer of the destructive aspects of Tess’ aggressors, Alec and Groby (Christopher Fairbank), her employer who works her like a horse. By the time forgiveness arrives for Tess, it is too late. This version of the story explores less its sexual connotations, as does Roman Polanski’s Tess, relying more heavily on the scales shifting hour to hour from fortune to failure and back. The whole viewing is a roller coaster ride, well-worth every moment to be reminded of the ways this classic tale lives on in its application to contemporary life. --Trinie Dalton

A Haunting Story5
I've never read the book before, and this was my first time watching a film adaptation of this story. Its funny because I accidentally started watching it, but within a few minutes I found myself captivated by this movie. By the end of the first two hours I found myself hating Alec for what he did to Tess. However, near the end I almost started liking him, which really surprised me. Even though he was a bad person his character was a tortured soul. He cared for Tess as much as he could care for anyone. He even tried to make things right by marrying her. I actually felt sorry for him as she kept rejecting him. I knew that he had never changed, but I felt that he really did care for her. Perhaps it was more so lust than true love that he had for her. I also felt sorry for Tess. I felt sorry for both of them if that is possible. I didn't quite understand the whole mistress thing though. I came to the conclusion that he wanted to marry her, but he couldn't because she was legally still married to Angel. She was his only lover though, so in theory they were married, but just not legally. Perhaps Alec didn't deserve death either. He told her that her husband wouldn't come back, but even Tess thought he wouldn't come back. I didn't think he was coming back either. I understand that she was exacting revenge upon the man who had essentially ruined her life. However, she also played a part in her own destruction. I felt her biggest downfall was telling Angel about her past. I suppose that was part of her characteristic purity. Angel was not as effective of a character as Tess, or Alec. I didn't hate him, or like him much. He was a wet mop of a character. His weakness was interesting though because it almost made it seem that Alec was more in love with Tess, or at least more passionate. Fate played a large part in everything else that happened to Tess. It seemed as though the murder of Alec was her way of finally taking fate into her own hands. Anyway, this movie had me crying for quite a while. The ending where she recreates the May Dance scene was also tragic. The only way for her to have had a happy ending would have been if Angel had fallen in love with her before she fell from grace. I took peace in the fact that at least she was set free in the end. In any case, this is a haunting story that lingers in the mind.
