Private Practice is a spin-off of the popular television show, Grey's Anatomy. Created by Shonda Rhimes, the series chronicles the life of Dr. Addison Montgomery as she leaves Seattle Grace Hospital for Los Angeles in order to join a private practice. Rhimes also serves as executive producer alongside Betsy Beers, Mark Gordon, Mark Tinker and Marti Noxon; the latter serving as showrunner in lieu of Rhimes' duties on Grey's Anatomy. The backdoor pilot which aired on May 3, 2007 was directed by Michael Grossman. Produced by ABC Studios, The Mark Gordon Company and Shondaland Productions, the series was officially greenlit and given a thirteen-episode order on May 11, 2007. It aired on Wednesday nights on 9:00PM Eastern/8:00PM Central. Due to the Writers Guild of America strike, the show only completed a production of 9 from the 13 ordered episodes for its first season. On October 18, 2007, ABC ordered a full season for the show, completing a total of 22 episodes for its first season. The show premiered on September 26, 2007 on ABC, following Dancing with the Stars whilst leading out Dirty Sexy Money.
Private Practice was shown in encores on Thursday nights at 10:00PM Eastern/9:00PM Central following Grey's Anatomy due to the hiatus/cancellation of Big Shots.
On February 11, 2008, ABC picked up Private Practice for the 2008-09 television season. With this, the show completes a second season of at least 24 new episodes.
On April 25, 2008, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced a DVD release. Private Practice: The Complete First Season – Extended Edition — a DVD set including all 9 original episodes and exclusive bonus features including bloopers, audio commentary, deleted scenes, two extended episodes, featurettes and more. — is scheduled for release September 16, 2008.

Overpriced for the number of episodes
I rather like "Private Practice". It's often implausible, but that's one of the features of escapist entertainment. The cast is talented and attractive. I'm looking forward to watching the new season. But I can't give this first DVD set a good review, because it just isn't a good value.
Due to the writers' strike, Season One of "Private Practice" only had 9 episodes. A normal season is 22 shows. But this collection's list price is the same as for a full season. The producers, having taken a major financial hit by not having as much advertising revenue as expected, are trying to recoup some of their costs from us by overpricing this set. I can't condone that.
I rate this collection 3-4 stars for quality, but only 0-1 stars for value. That gives a combined rating of 2 stars: disappointing.
Pretty awful, but theres hope
The fact that they did not bother to bring the show back after the strike, and one only recently started showing reruns leading up to the season primiere tells you that there were problems. I am hopeful that Shondra can turn it around for season 2.
I'll stay away from giving away any storylines and just give my views. My biggest problem is that you have these succesful, well established. middle aged doctors running around like kids who just moved into thier first apartment. It's hard to believe Addison Sheppard can't find a guy to give her the time of day. I can tolerate and actually enjoy this type of behavior on Grays Anatomy because 1) they are younger and just out of med school it seems more believable 2) it was original when they did it.
Unless they make serious changes, this show will fail for all the reason the Apprentice 2 with Martha Stewart failed. No one wants to see a lesser version of a popular show. especially with an out of place , inferior cast.
Great Show
I loved this show from the beginning and I couldn't wait for season 1 on dvd and can't wait for season 2 to start, Check it out it's really a great show.
