The Campaign (2012)
Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis fans, get ready to rock the vote. The Campaign, a silly and deceptively sly comedy directed by Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents), lets the two talented comedians do what they do best--be funny in ever more extreme ways. The premise is simple: Will Ferrell plays Congressman Brady, a slick inside-the-Beltway political pro who's comfy in his position, but who's rubbed some of his rich North Carolina constituents the wrong way. Said rich guys decide to put up their own candidate, Marty Huggins, played by Galifianakis, who they hope will be their patsy--if he can just get elected. It's clear from the get-go that Marty is out of his league, and as he and the congressman try ever more outrageous stunts to upstage and undermine each other, the laughs are almost nonstop. The chemistry between Farrell and Galifianakis is extraordinary and hilarious. The two practically run away with the whole film, which does a masterful job of skewering both political parties in a way that leaves everyone chuckling. The script by Chris Henchy and Shawn Harwell is well paced and plays up the sight-gag strengths of the two lead actors. Also impressive are Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, and John Lithgow as players with their own political agendas. But it's the two stars that make this Campaign one to watch from the front-row seat. --A.T. Hurley
First Position
As young aspiring ballet dancers approach a competition that could make or break their careers, the emotional stakes are so high that it's almost cheating to make a movie about them--the documentarians wisely stay out of the way, because how could anyone not get drawn in by these kids? Fourteen-year-old Michaela survived being orphaned in Sierra Leone, where she witnessed horrific atrocities, and now she fights against prejudice and assumptions to become an African-American ballerina. Eleven-year-old Aran is a balletic wunderkind who rides skateboards and plays video games, but his heart belongs to dance. Joan Sebastian, 16 years old, has come to New York from Colombia, where his family's annual income is a fraction of the scholarship he must win to pursue his career. They and other young dancers are caught between their parents and their instructors, who offer them love and encouragement but demand rigorous, unstinting dedication to one of the most physically challenging and painful art forms ever created. That these kids can sustain any passion for dancing is a miracle--and their dancing is sublime. First Position, like the spelling bee documentary Spellbound, combines fascinating portraits of gifted kids with the nail-biting suspense of fierce competition. Some scenes will make your heart leap; other scenes will make your heart break. It's a beautiful documentary, compelling and compassionate. --Bret Fetzer
