Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Many modern genre movies have developed a worrisome postmodern tic, often rushing to point out their own ridiculousness before the audience even gets a chance to get swept up and taken in. The historical monster mash Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is profoundly silly--even sillier, possibly, than the title suggests--but it conducts itself with an admirably straight face. Seth Grahame-Smith's script (based on his own novel) finds the Young Mr. Lincoln (Benjamin Walker) set on a path of righteous vengeance after watching his mother get fatally fanged. As he studies the law and woos the ravishing Mary Todd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) by day, the nights find him throwing down with an unending army of the undead. When he discovers the plot of a master vampire (the excellently dry Rufus Sewell) to conquer the United States, he makes the fateful decision to throw his hat (and silver-bladed ax) into the ring of national politics. Director Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, the Night Watch series) brings a wide-eyed fervor to the material, offering tantalizing hints of a larger mythology while also glorying in the wonky kineticism of the plentiful action sequences. (He's aided in his mission by legendary cinematographer Caleb Deschanel, who gives the images an old-timey View-Master texture.) Scholars of the historical record may well develop the vapors, but for susceptible viewers, the film's wink-free approach and exceedingly game performers make it frightfully easy to sit back, switch off, and bask in its poker-faced outrageousness. Many movies have had somebody thrown by a horse; this movie has a bad guy pick up a horse and throw it at the hero. Brothers and Sisters, there is a difference. --Andrew Wright

The Campaign
The Campaign

Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis fans, get ready to rock the vote. The Campaign, a silly and deceptively sly comedy directed by Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents), lets the two talented comedians do what they do best--be funny in ever more extreme ways. The premise is simple: Will Ferrell plays Congressman Brady, a slick inside-the-Beltway political pro who's comfy in his position, but who's rubbed some of his rich North Carolina constituents the wrong way. Said rich guys decide to put up their own candidate, Marty Huggins, played by Galifianakis, who they hope will be their patsy--if he can just get elected. It's clear from the get-go that Marty is out of his league, and as he and the congressman try ever more outrageous stunts to upstage and undermine each other, the laughs are almost nonstop. The chemistry between Farrell and Galifianakis is extraordinary and hilarious. The two practically run away with the whole film, which does a masterful job of skewering both political parties in a way that leaves everyone chuckling. The script by Chris Henchy and Shawn Harwell is well paced and plays up the sight-gag strengths of the two lead actors. Also impressive are Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, and John Lithgow as players with their own political agendas. But it's the two stars that make this Campaign one to watch from the front-row seat. --A.T. Hurley

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

A sweet and subtle love story, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World begins when Dodge (Steve Carell) watches his wife run away from him because she's just learned that an asteroid is going to destroy the Earth. Dodge finds himself unmoored in a world that's lost its bearings in a much bigger way; some people surrender to hedonism, some cling to the mundane patterns of their lives, and others just kill themselves. Then Dodge is given one last chance at meaning in his life: a neighbor named Penny (Keira Knightley) reveals that she's failed to give him some of his misdirected mail… including a letter from his cherished high school sweetheart, who reveals he was the love of her life. As civilization falls apart around them, Dodge and Penny set off on a road trip to reunite Penny with her family and Dodge with his lost love. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World could have been broad and goofy, but instead the movie takes the scenario seriously (without, mind you, losing its sense of humor). Dodge and Penny discover that their lives, disconnected from a possible future, aren't what they were, and the result is both comic and surprisingly heartfelt. An impressive supporting cast--including Patton Oswalt, Connie Britton, Derek Luke, William Petersen, Rob Corddry, Gillian Jacobs, T.J. Miller, Adam Brody, Melanie Lynskey, and more--fleshes out this world of lost souls. --Bret Fetzer

Take This Waltz
Take This Waltz

"What's missing?" is a question contemplated at some point in every relationship. Margot (Michelle Williams) loves her husband Lou (Seth Rogan), but sometimes she feels unaccountably empty and anxious. When she meets Daniel (Luke Kirby), she denies her instant attraction because she's a happily married woman. But when chance and circumstance continue to throw the two together, Margot's restlessness and longing override her fear of the unknown and she acts on their mutual attraction. Margot's choice permanently alters her relationship with both Lou and Daniel, but what eventually becomes apparent is that true happiness depends more on learning to love oneself than on the love received from others. Take This Waltz is an introspective, leisurely paced film that is sometimes graphic, is always heartfelt, and says more through meaningful looks and telling actions than with actual words. Luckily, Williams excels in this type of role and Rogan and Kirby also prove up to the challenge. --Tami Horiuchi

The Invisible War
The Invisible War

From Oscar® and Emmy®-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick (This Film Is Not Yet Rated; Twist of Faith) comes THE INVISIBLE WAR, a groundbreaking investigative documentary about one of America's most shameful and best-kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military. The film paints a startling picture of the extent of the problem - today, a female soldier in combat zones is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire. Twenty percent of all active-duty female servicewomen are sexually assaulted.

Profoundly moving, the film follows the stories of several idealistic young servicewomen who were raped and then betrayed by their own officers when they courageously came forward to report. Both a rallying cry for the hundreds of thousands of men and women who've been assaulted and a hopeful road map for change, THE INVISIBLE WAR is one of those rare films so powerful it has already helped change military policy.

Fear & Desire
Fear & Desire

An existential war film that is often compared with Kubrick's PATHS OF GLORY (1957) among three Kubrick films selected for the Library's National Film Registry-and FULL METAL JACKET (1987), FEAR AND DESIRE follows a squad of soldiers who have crash-landed behind enemy lines and must work their way downriver to rejoin their unit.

In the process, they encounter a peasant girl (Virginia Leith) and tie her to a tree, where she is tormented by a mentally unbalanced soldier (future director Paul Mazursky). Before making their escape, the soldiers determine the location of an enemy base and formulate a plot to assassinate its commanding officer.

Independently financed, and shot by a skeleton crew - with Kubrick controlling almost every aspect of production - FEAR AND DESIRE was conceived as a European-style art film, cloaked in the guise of a Hollywood war picture. Kubrick described the film to distributor Joseph Burstyn as allegorical and poetic. ''A drama of 'man', lost in a hostile world-deprived of material and spiritual foundations-seeking his way to an understanding of himself, and of life around him.''

Beautifully restored and remastered in HD from an original camera negative and thanks to the preservation efforts of the Library of Congress, Kino Lorber is proud to share with the world FEAR AND DESIRE, fresh from the 24-year-old mind of the man who would become the most influential filmmaker of his generation.
