Directed by Joss Whedon
Average customer review:

Serenity offers perfect proof that Firefly deserved a better fate than premature TV cancellation. Joss Whedon's acclaimed sci-fi Western hybrid series was ideally suited (in Browncoats, of course) for a big-screen conversion, and this action-packed adventure allows Whedon to fill in the Firefly backstory, especially the history and mystery of the spaceship Serenity's volatile and traumatized stowaway, River Tam (Summer Glau). Her lethal skills as a programmed "weapon" makes her a coveted prize for the power-hungry planetary Alliance, represented here by an Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who'll stop at nothing to retrieve River from Serenity's protective crew. We still get all the quip-filled dialogue and ass-kicking action that we've come to expect from the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Whedon goes a talented step further here, blessing his established ensemble cast with a more fully-developed dynamic of endearing relationships. Serenity's cast is led with well-balanced depth and humor by Nathan Fillion as Captain Mal Reynolds, whose maverick spirit is matched by his devotion to crewmates Wash (Alan Tudyk), Zoe (Gina Torres), fun-loving fighter Jayne (Adam Baldwin), engineer Kaylee (Jewel Staite), doctor Simon (Sean Maher), and Mal's former flame Inara (Morena Baccarin), who plays a pivotal role in Whedon's briskly-paced plot. As many critics agreed, Serenity offered all the fun and breezy excitement that was missing from George Lucas's latter-day Star Wars epics, and Whedon leaves an opening for a continuing franchise that never feels cheap or commercially opportunistic. With the mega-corporate mysteries of Blue Sun yet to be explored, it's a safe bet we haven't seen the last of the good ship Serenity. --Jeff Shannon

An American Carol
Directed by David Zucker
Average customer review:

From David Zucker, the director of The Naked Gun and Airplane! comes a bare-knuckle comedy where no one is safe from the onslaught of lunacy. When obnoxious Hollywood director Michael Malone organizes a Ban the 4th of July campaign, his efforts are upended by a gang of spirits from America s past. Zucker roasts a herd of sacred cows in this latest parody featuring an all-star cast.

Wedding Crashers [Blu-ray]
Directed by David Dobkin
Average customer review:

With Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as a pair of brazen wedding crashers, this buddy/romantic comedy milks a few big laughs from its foolproof premise. Under the direction of David Dobkin (who previously worked with Wilson on Shanghai Knights), the movie ranges from bawdy romp to mushy romance, and that tonal identity crisis curtails the overall hilarity. But when the well-teamed costars are firing on all pistons with fast-paced dialogue and manic situations, belly laughs are delivered at a steady clip. Things get complicated when the guys infiltrate the family of the Treasury Secretary (Christopher Walken), resulting in a romantic pair-off between Vaughn and the congressman's oversexed daughter Gloria (Isla Fisher) while Wilson sincerely woos another daughter, Claire (Rachel McAdams), who's unhappily engaged to an Ivy League cheater (Bradley Cooper). Walken is more or less wasted in his role, but Jane Seymour and Henry Gibson make amusing appearances, and a surprise guest arrives late in the game for some over-the-top scene-stealing. It's all a bit uneven, but McAdams (considered by some to be "the next Julia Roberts") is a pure delight, and with enough laughs to make it easily recommended, Wedding Crashers will likely find its place on DVD shelves alongside other flawed but enjoyable R-rated comedies that embrace a naughtier, nastier brand of humor with no need for apologies. --Jeff Shannon

Its name: EVENT HORIZON. The high-tech, pioneering research spacecraft mysteriously vanished, without a trace, on its maiden voyage seven years earlier. But a weak, persistent signal form the long-missing craft prompts a rescue team, headed by the intrepid Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne, THE MATRIX and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III), to wing its way through the galaxy on a bold rescue mission. Accompanying Miller is his elite crew and the lost ship’s designer (Sam Neill, JURASSIC PARK); their mission is to find and salvage the state-of-the-art interstellar horror. Kathleen Quinlan (APOLLO 13) and Joely Richardson (TV’s NIP/TUCK) also star in this gripping sci-fi thriller.

Days of Thunder [Blu-ray]
From Paramount
Average customer review:

This new Tom Cruise vehicle, directed by Tony Scott, is the latest example of the nearly demagogic brand of pop-culture uplift practiced by the producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. (They were also responsible for "Flashdance" and "Top Gun.") It's about winning, and nothing else. The setting this time is the stock-car racing circuit. The screenwriter, Robert Towne, seems to be trying to underplay the rah-rah elements of the material-to give competition some point other than pure ego gratification. And he supplies some nice dialogue: easy, natural-sounding macho banter among the drivers and their crews. But the movie has been stripped for speed: by the big race (the Daytona 500), all the ambiguities in the script have been removed, and there's nothing to interfere with Cruise's, and the producers', streak to the finish line. Like the previous Simpson-Bruckheimer pictures, it's designed-engineered, really-to give audiences an overdose of the thrill of victory; it wants us to jump out of our seats, pumping our fists in the air and roaring for the hero to pulverize his opponents. The racing sequences are very ordinary. Also with Robert Duvall, who gives a lively performance as the hero's mentor, and Michael Rooker, Nicole Kidman, Randy Quaid, and Cary Elwes.-T.R. Jillian Michaels, the trainer from NBC's The Biggest Loser and self-proclaimed "TV's toughest fitness guru," runs through circuit training like a drill sergeant on caffeine. Her theory is to keep moving in between exercises to burn twice as many calories, so she cycles her team through sumo squats, mountain climbers, jump ropes, shoulder raises and bicycle moves without taking a breath. If she doesn't think one of her comrades is picking up his knees high enough, she makes everyone do 30 more, with a sadistic grin. As a result, you can almost literally watch the muscle burn. Michaels' Shape-Up Front DVD works out the chest, shoulders, triceps and quads. It also requires two props: a bench-style exercise step and light dumbbells. The DVD features include printable diet/exercise logs, nutrition tips and recipes. Despite a lower-level option, it isn't for anyone looking for a low-impact aerobic workout. --Ellen A. Kim

Customer Reviews

Boy does Jillian know how to work it!5
AWESOME!!!
She really knows how to put you to the test.
You have to be fit to be able to keep up with her and her team though. Not recommended for those who don't exercise frequently already.

The 6-week plan information is misleading3
The workouts are pretty good, but accessing the "6-week bikini workout" and other special features requires a DVDROM to access. It is not an insert like most workout DVDs. All in all, it was enjoyable for a great price.

One of The Best DVD's Out There5
I've only gotten through the first 2 DVD's, Shape up Front & Back, but I can tell you this is how a trainer will work you out at a real gym. With regard to another buyer who commented that she gave this DVD series a 4 instead of a 5 due to the lack of instructions...well, if you read the DVD (it was either on the packaging or within the DVD words scrolling) to review the ENTIRE DVD before doing any of the exercises.

First of all, I do that with every DVD I use because how else can I record what I'm doing if I don't write it down. Yes, I actually write down everything that's done and log it in my computer system so every time I do it, I'm not retyping but just seleting the workout so I know what it consisted of.

Anyway, it's a very intense set of DVD's and it's not for the beginner. I also bought one of her other DVD's (30-Day Shred) but haven't use it yet as I bought them around the same time. There are good reviews on this one too but you only get 3 separate workouts which are supposed to be progressive. The reviewers pretty much tell you to alternate all three levels anyway so your workout won't get boring...just do the beginners versions on the ones that are difficult. Sounds like a great idea to me. I wouldln't have waited to progress anyway simply because I like to keep it interesting.

Remember, weight bearing exercises are extremely good for your joints and bones...i know I have chondromalacia patella...and if i can do them and feel MUCH better afterwards that's saying something.

Good luck to everyone using this.
(side note: i really feel like i'm on speed or something after doing these 30 minute work outs...i am not kidding.)

The Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds live concert was a sold-out sensation everywhere it played, and this concert video is the next best thing to being there for all the fans that couldn't get tickets to attend the concert in person. The movie opens with Miley Cyrus backstage in make-up and hair, warming up with vocal exercises, then cuts to Hannah Montana (her alter ego)'s performance of "Rock Star," and then back in time to four weeks before her performance when concert rehearsals were just beginning. It runs like a backstage special feature for a while, following Hannah Montana through coaching, choreography scenes with Kenny Ortega, and rehearsal sessions. Then it's back to concert footage from opening night in St. Louis and all along the tour, seasoned here and there with some fun looks at the concerts' special effects, quick costume changes, other logistical challenges (Hannah gets dropped during a routine early in the tour), and lots of shots of the enthusiastic, mostly female 'tween audiences. The 3D format gives the audience a nice sense of being there and includes some effective, if somewhat overused shots of the crowd waving, Hannah/Miley reaching out to the audience, and fun stunts like the drummer's twirling stick thrown high in the air and the guitar player's pick being tossed out into the audience. The sound is adequate, but fails to replicate the live concert experience (the plus side is that the audience's ears won't be ringing for hours after the performance). Hannah Montana's performance includes "Rock Star," "Life's What You Make It," "Just Like You," "Nobody's Perfect," and "We Got the Party." The Jonas Brothers perform "When You Look Me In the Eyes" and "Year 3000," and then Miley hits the stage with "Start All Over," "I Got Nerve," "I Miss You" (which Miley wrote in honor of her Granddad's passing), "Going Away," "GNO: Girl's Night Out," and "The Best of Both Worlds." This 3D concert presentation truly is the "best of both worlds," a 3D concert experience with easy availability and minimal expense. Better yet is the message that girls can do anything they want if they put their minds and hearts to it. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

On the DVD
The DVD presentation of this concert video differs markedly from the version released in theaters in that the DVD relies on dual colored glasses for the 3-D experience rather than the polarizing glasses used in the theatrical version. The switch in format is necessary because polarizing 3-D technology is not easily applied to the home DVD format. What this means for the home viewer is a significantly discernable loss of color saturation and marked color shift when choosing the 3-D viewing option, versus the standard viewing option or the in-theater experience. The DVD's 3-D effects are still cool, but viewers lose some of the sense of being right in the concert auditorium. Bonus features include the Jonas Brothers performing "S.O.S.," Miley Cyrus singing "Good and Broken," and eight sing-a-long tracks from the movie. The "Backstage Disney: The Ultimate Personal Tour" feature is an 11-1/2-minute guided tour lead by Miley Cyrus that takes viewers through a typically hectic concert day and includes an abundance of interview footage with Cyrus and each of the Jonas Brothers. The tour emphasizes how hard everyone involved in the concert works, guides viewers through the secret passageways and trap doors that make some of the concert's special effects possible, includes a few words from Miley's sister Brandi, and relates Miley Cyrus' passion for her work and her thoughts about her purpose as an entertainer. While the DVD is a must-have for Hannah Montana fans, it's highly recommended that you catch the film in a theater--should it make a return engagement--for the best possible viewing experience. --Tami Horiuchi

Amazing 3D effects5
My son is a big fan of Hanna Montana so I bought this dvd .
Well, I would just like to comment on the 3D effects and they are really really good.
There are 4 pairs of glasses in the box, quite comfortable to wear and it really puts you right there in the concert hall.
I fully recommend not only for the music but also for the effects !

Hannah Montana 3-D movie4
I bought this item for my grand daughter for her birthday. She said it was a good movie but it jumped back and forth between 3-D and regular movie. Those of us who have seen 3-D movies know this is the norm. She overall gave it a thumbs up.

BAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Looney Tunes - Golden Collection, Volume Two

Greetings, Looneytics! For all who rightly place Looney Tunes alongside Mom, apple pie and web-surfing at work as American institutions, this is your time to rise and shine and watch. Yes, here on 4 discs you'll find 60 more of the finest, funniest, bestest Golden Era cartoons from the feverishly bent artistic minds at Termite Terrace. Disc 1 showcases a certain wascally wabbit. The happiness of pursuit is center stage in Disc 2 and 3's respective batches of Road Runner and Sylvester/Tweety fun. Disc 4 is an all-star cavalcade of Hollywood parodies and more. All 60 toons are restored, remastered, uncut. And each disc is chock-a-block with bonus goodies. It's a 24-carrot gem of a collection. Anything less would be dethpicable.

Brash, fast-paced, and hysterically funny, the Warner Brothers cartoons rank among the undisputed treasures of American animation and American comedy. This second collection, a follow-up to Looney Tunes: Golden Collection, includes such gems as "Porky in Wackyland," "A Bear for Punishment," "Gee Whiz-z-z," The Great Piggy Bank Robbery," and "I Love to Singa." A short documentary about director Bob Clampett features several cartoon historians, animator Eric Goldberg, Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont, and Ren and Stimpy creator John Kricfalusi (enthusiastic but over the top). But Warners continues its scattergun approach to selecting films. There are only eight cartoons by Clampett in the set, plus three by Tex Avery and one by Frank Tashlin. "Rabbit Fire" and "Rabbit Seasoning" appear on the first set, but the third cartoon in Jones's trilogy, "Duck! Rabbit! Duck!" isn't on either. More than two-thirds of the films are by Friz Freleng and Chuck Jones. That's not necessarily a bad thing. "Show Biz Bugs," "Bugs Bunny Rides Again," and the Oscar-winning "Tweety Pie" showcase Freleng's razor-sharp timing. "What's Opera, Doc," "The Dover Boys," and the justly celebrated "One Froggy Evening" rank among Jones's boldest experiments and most brilliant successes.

Volume Two includes some genuine rarities, among them, "Sinkin' in the Bathtub" (1930), the first Looney Tune, and the Oscar-winning documentary "So Much for So Little." With 60-plus cartoons, transferred from good prints Looney Tunes: Golden Collection, Volume 2 is a collection to treasure. (Rated G, suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon

Fantastic!!!!5
As a long-time suffering Phillies fan of course I was going to love this DVD and of course I will be a little biased here. But bear in mind one thing: I have never seen another championship DVD to compare this to but I will do my best.
It opens with Jamie Moyer, Ryan Howard, Jimmie Rollins, Brad Lidge, and Charlie Manuel reading Phil Sheridans Philadelphia Inquirere article that day after we won.
Now seeing as this is a "World Series" dvd I often wondered if they only covered the World Series, but thankfully that is not the case. It opens in Spring Training just as the arduous baseball season does and recaps the entire season. Touching games such as the wonderfull 7-0 deficit to the Mets that the Phils overcame to win and the Division clincher and plenty of highlights in between.
The dvd then covers the NLDS and the NLCS in the same chapter. then they convered the World Series which is a bulk of the DVD itself. Each game is covered in detail including the dabacle that was game 5.
The special features are incredible as well. There is one where it has the best of Shane Victorino who was miked during the WS. Also, it includes the last out of the Division clincher, NLDS clincher, NLCS clincher and it has the final three outs of the World Series. Also they have the trophy presentation as well as the locker room celebration. This DVD is nearly 2 hours long, which surprised me and I can watch it again and again and again. Bottom line, if you are Phillies fan buy the damn thing you will love, If you are a Mets fan, buy it to see what you are missing.

Great for Phillies fans, OK for Everyone Else4
As a Phillies diehard this one was worth rushing out for and purchasing in its first day of release. I couldn't wait to relive some of the memorable moments from this unexpectedly spectacular Phillies season - particularly the postseason run. For even the average Philly fan this DVD does not disappoint. Starting off with a series of emotionally grabbing clips and organization members reading excerpts from Philadelphia Inquirer articles written the day following their World Series clinching victory. It's simply awash in phanatical pro-Philly grandeur and well paced, neither rushing through storylines nor bogged down in specifics.

That said if you are a Rays fan prepared to be disappointed. The first 21-22 minutes are totally devoted to Philadelphia's ride to the Series, whereas the following portion of just 6-7 minutes is devoted to Tampa Bay's unlikely run. I can remember the 1993 World Series VHS doing a far better job at representing both the winning Blue Jays and losing Phillies with roughly equal attention served.

For everyone else this is simply a pleasant and expertly produced walk through of the happenings in the 2008 World Series - not a particularly riveting affair but interesting enough to hold the attention of any baseball lover. The Phillies faithful meanwhile will bask in the glow of their championship, Philadelphia's first in a quarter-century, and the images therein. Brilliant depictions, never before seen camera angles and even parade footage fill the better than 90-minute pseudo-Phillies documentary. Simply a must have for any Phillies fan and a great (and cheap) holiday gift!!!

Phinally!5
Philly Phinally did it! The Phillies put on one heck of a show. They totally earned this. Such a great series! It couldn't have happened to a more likable bunch of players. I only wish I was in Philly (rather than Chicago) to be a part of the celebration. I'm so proud of my hometown! I'll be buying this DVD and putting it on loop!

Pixar genius reigns in this funny romantic comedy, which stars a robot who says absolutely nothing for a full 25 minutes yet somehow completely transfixes and endears himself to the audience within the first few minutes of the film. As the last robot left on earth, Wall-E (voiced by Ben Burtt) is one small robot--with a big, big heart--who holds the future of earth and mankind squarely in the palm of his metal hand. He's outlasted all the "Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class" robots that were assigned some 700 years ago to clean up the environmental mess that man made of earth while man vacationed aboard the luxury spaceship Axiom. Wall-E has dutifully gone about his job compacting trash, the extreme solitude broken only by his pet cockroach, but he's developed some oddly human habits and ideas. When the Axiom sends its regularly scheduled robotic EVE probe (Elissa Knight) to earth, Wall-E is instantly smitten and proceeds to try to impress EVE with his collection of human memorabilia. EVE's directive compels her to bring Wall-E's newly collected plant sprout to the captain of the Axiom and Wall-E follows in hot pursuit. Suddenly, the human world is turned upside down and the Captain (Jeff Garlin) joins forces with Wall-E and a cast of other misfit robots to lead the now lethargic people back home to earth. Wall-E is a great family film with the most impressive aspect being the depth of emotion conveyed by a simple robot--a machine typically considered devoid of emotion, but made so absolutely touching by the magic of Pixar animation. Also well-worth admiring are the sweeping views from space, the creative yet disturbing vision of what strange luxuries a future space vacation might offer, and the innovative use of trash in a future cityscape. Underneath the slapstick comedy and touching love story is a poignant message about the folly of human greed and its potential effects on earth and the entire human race. Wall-E is preceded in theaters by the comical short Presto in which a magician's rabbit, unfed one too many times takes his revenge against the egotistical magician. Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy abounds in Wall-e???5

The reviewers who claim that Wall-e is some malicious form of clandestine liberal wacko propaganda that will warp the minds of impressionable children need to lighten up and smell the paranoia. In their worldview, "Drill, Baby, Drill!" would be a much more inspiring premise for this film. Okay then, why not make remake the movie in your own vision, with Wall-e as a robotic uber-hero (like Ayn Rand's Howard Roark), who doesn't need anyone but himself and his intransigent force of will to help re-industrialize an economically depressed planet as he teams up with the Big and Large titans of industry, whose sweat and blood is the embodiment of the virtue of selfish egoism but also trickles down to the benefit all of mankind?

Instead of trash everywhere, oil and gas derricks and nuclear cooling towers and the smokestacks of coal plants swamp the skyline as Wall-e works on the greatest and most objectively rational project of all: the world's largest SUV production plant.

Meanwhile, after being voted off the planet, all the hippie liberals wander through space on the SS Noam Chomsky in a vessel made out of cannabis and piloted by a direct descendant of Keith Olbermann and Katrina vanden Heuvel. Seeking to return to Earth one day to force the enemies of liberalism into Marxist communes and Reeducation Camps, Eve arrives from the Chomsky, only to find instead a thriving industrious society that is so perfectly utopian that taxes and entitlements and homosexuals have all been abolished. In the closing shot, we see Wall-e as he rolls to the top of his nearly completed paragon of neoconservative values (and non-union to boot!) with Eve hovering at his side, in subjugated awe of Wall-e's infallible logic as he expounds in electronic beeps and chirps for 45 minutes, effectively deconstructing and disproving, once and for all, that vast liberal conspiracy known as global warming. And in a brief humorous parting shot of the Chomsky, the ineptitude and touchy-feely emotionalism of the left-wing wackos results in their destruction as the vessel, its inhabitants all out of marijuana and unable to grow anymore due to an ongoing labor strike, goes up in flames as Lieutenant Bill Maher IX attempts to light the ship and smoke it by driving it right into the sun. The End.

On second thought, that's not so inspiring, is it? I'll stick with the version Pixar made -- a visually stunning masterpiece with a great anachronistic soundtrack and a thought-provoking plot for adults and a magical story of friendship that my children thoroughly love and enjoy...

Great Movie5

I ordered this for my son and when it finally arrived in the mail I was glad as it made it on time before Christmas.Very sweet story for kids my son loves it and watches it over and over again.

Digital Copy Requires Computer to have DVD player3

I'm not going to waste your time telling you about the movie, lots of other reviewers have done that better than I could. I just wanted to be sure it was mentioned that if you buy the 3 disc special edition copy that you know the digital copy requires you to have a dvd drive in your computer. We bought Journey to the Center of the Earth that came with the digital copy. You just put it in the cd drive of the computer and you downloaded the movie from a web page to your computer. Wall-E however, requires you to have a dvd drive. This was not mentioned when I read the description (or maybe I missed it) but now I paid extra money for something I can't use. So, I wanted to spare someone else out there with an old computer that wants to watch this on their system the same experience. Hope it helps someone.

Blu Monday: Sports in High Definition

(Blu Monday is our roundup of what's new in Blu-ray...)

One high-definition question that comes up a few times a year is when will major sports be available on Blu-ray? We love to watch live games in high definition, but keepsake DVDs are only in standard definition. Just this year, though, we've gotten our first Blu-ray releases for the Big Four, meaning MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL (I'm not counting wrestling, swimsuit stuff, etc.). For the Philadelphia Phillies, the World Series highlight film came out on both DVD and Blu-ray (the Blu-ray came out three weeks later), and the Boston Celtics' NBA championship film also came out on DVD and Blu-ray (the Blu-ray was almost four months later). Major catch: both Blu-ray discs are the highlight films only. If you want to watch the actual games, you'll have to stick with the standard-definition DVD sets Philadelphia Phillies 2008 World Series Collector's Edition and Boston Celtics: 2007-2008 NBA Champions Special Edition. And of course the big prize is the Super Bowl. Perhaps that will be released on Blu-ray in 2009.--David

Artists Under the Big Top: PerplexedArtists Under the Big Top: Perplexed
Directed by Alexander Kluge

Hannelore Hoger (Lost Honor of Katharina Blum), veteran actress of the New German Cinema, stars as Leni Peickert in Alexander Kluge s compelling parable about art vs. entertainment, culture vs. commerce.
Leni inherits the family circus after her father is killed while practicing a difficult act. Feeling that small-time carnivals are on their way out, she updates the show by turning it into a reform circus, which consists of socially relevant entertainment. Unfortunately, it fails to attract customers, and her circus goes bankrupt twice.
The story of Leni and her woes is slight but the strength of Kluge s film is the complex imagery, with its masterful montages, filmic references, and layers of meaning. Like the circus in the film, Kluge finds popular film also to be in the throes of change a viewpoint that turned out to be prophetic.

My Heart Is Mine AloneMy Heart Is Mine Alone
Directed by Helma Sanders-Brahms

The story of the real-life love affair between Jewish poet Else Lasker-Schueler and Nazi poet Gottfried Benn is told largely through their poetry in this experimental drama scored with improvised music.
The poets relationship epitomizes the idea of the ill-fated romance as Lasker-Schueler is forced to leave the country because of the very ideology that Benn believes in. She drifts from country to country until she lands in Jerusalem to stay, while he realizes his mistake when the Nazis condemn his artistic school as degenerate.
The passion of Lasker-Schueler and Benn lives in their poetry as Helma Sander-Brahms focuses on the artistry of these unfortunate artists lost to the winds of history.
