Amazon.co.uk Review
The Wire is one of those programmes where the increasing number of people who seem to passionately recommend it are simply not wrong. For buried underneath a mountain of praise, and talk of it being one of the finest television shows of all time, is a staggering piece of work, one that slowly but surely takes a look at the many facets of the drugs trade, centred in the city of Baltimore.
Series by series, we spend time with the cops, the dealers, the media, local politicians, the education system and more, as The Wire gives each careful treatment, and a three-dimensional portrayal. It also paints a picture of a city in real trouble, with Baltimore one of The Wire’s uncredited stars. But where the show really delivers is in the characters it creates and moulds, and the very real troubles and challenges each of them must face. The show’s detailed strokes are even more compelling than the broader picture it paints.
Enhanced by a series of non-showy performances in front of the camera, and some immaculate writing behind, The Wire really is that proverbial real deal. It’s genuinely unpredictable (characters of all sizes find themselves ruthlessly bumped off when you least expect them to), fearless in its tackling of certain subjects, and is that very masterpiece that an increasing army of champions of The Wire suggest it is. The five series contained here are genuinely American television at its very finest, right through to the final scene. Mesmerising television. --Simon Brew

The Fox And The Child [2008]
Directed by Luc Jacquet

Amazon.co.uk Review
A fresh and quite beautiful film, The Fox And The Child feels old-fashioned in a good way, mixing as it does a nature documentary with the story of a young girl who makes friends, and tries to tame, a fox. It doesn’t do this in an irresponsible way, either, remembering to raise one or two alarm bells as it takes us on its fascinating journey.
The Fox And The Child is also, it should be noted, the new film from Luc Jacquet, who previously achieved major international success with March of the Penguins. It’s blessed with similarly stunning photography, too, with very little spoken word save for Kate Winslet’s narration, allowing the outstanding visuals to take centre stage. Filmed in France, the camera soaks up the wonderful mountain landscape, and Jacquet allows it to linger and take in its majesty.
It’s also a very patient and deliberately paced film, and that means that The Fox And The Child is inevitably suited to youngsters whose attention span does waiver within a matter of minutes. But it’s genuinely an adventure that the entire family can enjoy, and Jacquet ensures that it’s never less than engaging. Warmly recommended. --Jon Foster
Synopsis
THE FOX AND THE CHILD is a charming 'nature-tale' from the award-winning writer/director of MARCH OF THE PENGUINS, Luc Jacquet. The film follows a young girl's secret endeavours to tame a wild fox, and her resulting experiences in the stunning mountain wilderness of Eastern France. It soon becomes evident, however, that this is not a mere 'kid befriends cute critter' narrative, as the film adopts a cautionary tone about our relationship with animals and our somewhat misguided understanding of them.
Part children's adventure story, part wildlife documentary, THE FOX AND THE CHILD makes use of Jacquet's now trademark photography, basking in the simple beauty of nature - a spectacle which is only heightened by the almost entire absence of dialogue. Kate Winslet narrates this English language version as the nostalgic voice of the now adult child recounting the story to her own son, turning the film into an enchanting fable to be passed down through the generations. A guaranteed future classic, with enough heart and sophistication to be enjoyed by the whole family.

Product Description
Duncan Ferguson was a Goodison Park hero! Arriving initially on loan from Glasgow Rangers in 1994 he very quickly became an Evertonian idol. His robust, brave, yet undoubtedly skilful style endeared him to the supporters and a towering header that found the net against Liverpool just after his arrival rubber-stamped his reputation. BIG DUNC tells the whole amazing story of how a gangly youth from the Scottish town of Stirling became one of the most feared and iconic centre-forwards in the Premier League. This Official Everton DVD covers Ferguson s career from schoolboy football, through Dundee United, Glasgow Rangers, his two spells at Goodison, a stay at Newcastle United and an all-too brief international career with Scotland. But, as with most comic-book heroes, there are ups and downs in equal measure. The goals and the glory, the injuries and the red cards, the brushes with the law, the burglaries and the pigeons! They re all here on BIG DUNC packed with fantastic Duncan Ferguson action and including interviews with Joe Royle, Howard Kendall, Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Craig Brown and many, many more. Extra Features: Extended highlights of Everton 1-0 Man Utd, 20 April 2004 when Duncan got Goodison Park rocking. American Gangster [Blu-ray] [2007]

Synopsis
American Gangster is based on a true story and set in 1968 Harlem, where Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) is a driver for Bumpy Johnson, one of the top figures in the city's criminal world. When Bumpy dies, Lucas swoops in, taking over his predecessor's empire and expanding it over the next few years with his sale of a particularly potent brand of heroin. Meanwhile, New Jersey cop Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) begins to investigate the New York drug world and discovers that there's a new power in town. Thanks to screenwriter Steve Zaillian, as well as Washington and Crowe, American Gangster creates a convincing portrait of two men who are neither entirely good nor entirely bad. Washington plays Lucas as a man who buys his mother a palatial home but doesn't hesitate to beat his brother's head against a window. Crowe's Roberts may turn in a million-dollar find, but he cheats on his wife. Sadly, they only meet onscreen toward the end of the film, but the minimal interaction between the two Oscar winners is fascinating. Even though the focus is on Lucas and Roberts, American Gangster is filled with a wealth of strong characters played by talented actors, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Josh Brolin, Ted Levine, John Hawkes, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Carla Gugino, Ruby Dee, Joe Morton, and rappers T.I. and RZA. It's an epic film, with a run time of over two and a half hours, but it's time well spent. Fans of classic crime films such as The Godfather, Serpico, and Carlito's Way will certainly be pleased by this addition to the genre.

Itty Bitty Titty Committee [2007]

Editorial Reviews
Synopsis
But I'm A Cheerleader director Jamie Babbitt helms this radical comedy about Anna (Melonie Diaz of Raising Victor Vargas), a teenage lesbian who finds a community in a group of feisty feminists. Get up, stand up and let your voice be heard.
Anna is coming out. But not as gay: as a revolutionary. Itty Bitty Titty Committee is a rockin' love song to the heady rush of sex, freedom and rebellion that happens when an everyday girl discovers her own strength and the righteous indignation needed to take action and change the world.
Anna (Melonie Diaz) is a shy, just-out-of-high-school lesbian, still living with her parents and working at a plastic surgery clinic. She is depressed because of a recent break-up but lives in a super-loving, gay-is-A-OK kind of family. Her world opens up one night when she catches a one-woman army reclaiming public space for women (i.e. spray painting the clinic where Anna works). A recruiting member of the guerrilla girls-esque Clits in Action (C(i)A), Sadie (Nicole Vicius) is trying to make people aware of how bad plastic surgery is for women. With an undeniable attraction to this sexy, raw rebel girl, Anna eagerly joins the ranks of C(i)A and starts her roller-coaster ride from meek and mousy to bad-ass bravado. Full of mosh pits, power fists and utter charm.
