Review for The Universe: Season One:

The sky and outer space have fascinated man for centuries and the History Channel's series The Universe is the story of man's study of the cosmos from his earliest attempts to map and understand the heavens through modern day scientific studies, advances, and theories. A mix of historical footage, modern space imaging, and conceptual computer graphics presented in high-definition, the visual component of this production is absolutely breathtaking. Each of the 13 44-minute episodes begins with a general introduction of subjects ranging from the sun to individual planets, alien galaxies, the search for extra-terrestrial life, and scientific theories like the Big Bang. Each topic is then broken down into a series of segments that detail specific ideas, theories, or components integral to the understanding of the main topic as well as historical material, current studies and theories, and projections of potential future events and scientific advances. The 90-minute "Beyond the Big Bang" feature relates "the story of everything"--from the universe's formation following the "Big Bang" to its eventual projected demise from unchecked expansion dubbed the "Big Rip." Leading experts from universities and scientific institutions around the world do a great job of taking very complex subjects like galaxies with spiral density arms and relating them to easily graspable concepts like a city with a downtown core surrounded by suburbs and plagued by freeway traffic jams. Amazing photographs from the Hubble space telescope, infrared views from the Spitzer space telescope, and x-ray images from the Chandra X-ray Observatory augment understanding as do demonstrations of modern science's ability to simulate historical events like the formation of earth and to project future cosmic events. The Universe is a fascinating and understandable study of space that speaks to viewers ranging from the generally curious to the serious student of cosmology. --Tami Horiuchi

Review for The Universe: Season Two:

With the DVD release (on five discs) of this, the complete second season of The Universe, the History Channel has now devoted a combined total of more than 25 hours, not including bonus material, to its documentary study of that combination of time, space, and matter that we call our universe. That’s a lot. But then you consider the mind-boggling age and size of the universe itself: 13.7 billion years old, and big beyond our comprehension; infinite, in fact, and expanding rapidly. By those measures, it’s apparent that this fascinating series could probably air for longer than The Simpsons and Gunsmoke (the two longest running shows in TV history) put together and still not run out of things to talk about. The 18 episodes from Season Two cover an appropriately wide range of topics, from "Cosmic Holes" to "Cosmic Collisions," from supernovas to gravity. There are episodes about the weather in space, the largest objects in space (hint: they’re really, really big, like the so-called "cosmic web" of galaxies, which is a hundred million billion times bigger than Earth), and traveling to and colonizing space. The amount of information and data provided is enormous. Jargon abounds, including terms like "lunar transient phenomena," "pulsar planets," "hot Jupiters," "dark matter" and "dark energy," "collisional families," the "heavy bombardment period," and many, many more. And the numbers are mind-boggling: for instance, it’s estimated that the impact of the asteroid that landed on the Yucatan Peninsula some 65 million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs, was equal to that of dropping a Hiroshima-sized atomic bomb every second for 140 years! Still, some may find the episodes that involve informed speculation more interesting than those that deal in facts. We know that the Moon affects ocean tides, but does it also have an effect on human behavior? If the Big Bang was the beginning of the universe, what came before it? Instead of using rockets to go to space, can scientists actually build a "space elevator" that will reach from an orbiting satellite some 60 thousand miles down to Earth? All of this is delivered by way of very convincing computer-generated imagery and other effects, along with dozens of interviews with astronomers and other experts, photos, film footage, and so on. Best of all, while it can get a bit dense, technically speaking, by and large The Universe will be readily accessible to most viewers. --Sam Graham How the Earth was Made: There's a lot of information in How the Earth Was Made, but perhaps the most interesting relates to time. Quite often, the numbers are so staggering that scientists refer to it as "deep time," an appropriate term when one grapples with the notion that our planet is 4.5 billion years old, or that the oceans were formed by rainfall that lasted literally millions of years, or that 700 million years ago, Earth was completely covered by ice that was a mile thick, with surface temperatures reaching minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. On the other end of the scale are numbers that seem surprisingly small: for instance, it wasn't until 220 years ago that the accepted church doctrine regarding the planet's age (no more than 6000 years, according to the Bible) was seriously challenged and that the key to its past was found in rocks, not scripture, while the discovery that dinosaurs once ruled the Earth came considerably later than that. Using a combination of computer graphics and animation, various drawings and diagrams, photos, location footage, and expert commentary, this fascinating, 94-minute History Channel production takes us from the very beginning, when the planet was formed by meteors colliding in space, through numerous major events (including the appearance of water, granite, and oxygen) and mind-boggling catastrophes (such as mass extinctions caused by volcanic eruptions or the enormous meteor that wiped out 75% of all living things, including the dinosaurs, some 65 million years ago), right up to the present; there's even a glimpse into the future, when Earth will likely end up as barren and lifeless as Mars (no need to hit the panic button yet, though--a few billion more years will pass before that happens). Bonus features include additional scenes and a documentary entitled "Inside the Volcano." --Sam Graham

Review for The Planets:

Where did it all begin? How did the universe give birth to the sun and its family of planets that form our solar system? How is a bubbling atomic reactor in space the source of warmth and light for life as we know it? Why will Mars be the first planet we colonize? What is the long-term fate of the planets in our solar system? Are we alone? The Planets is an entertaining, comprehensive, and informative A&E documentary series that sets out to answer many of life's most physically existential questions. This series combines scientific history of early scientists, rich knowledge from the leading minds in modern astronomy, and extraordinary image technology to tell the story of our solar system, from its beginnings to the present and beyond. The topics of the eight-volumes are: "Different Worlds," "Terra Firma," "Giants," Moon," "Star," "Atmosphere," "Life Beyond the Sun," and "Destiny." From the sweltering rocky surface of Mercury to the violent stormy skies of Jupiter to the cold, mysterious land of Pluto, The Planets is a fascinating exploration of discovery and adventure for anyone who has looked up into space on a starry night in total amazement. --Rob Bracco

Karol: The Pope, The Man

Karol: The Pope, The Man

Directed by Giacomo Battiato
Average customer review:

This highly acclaimed feature film on Pope John Paul II was filmed on location in Italy and Poland. Focusing on the papacy of John Paul and the tremendous impact he had on the Church and the world, Karol: The Pope, The Man stars actor Piotr Adamczyk in a deeply moving portrayal of the beloved pontiff. It is the powerful true story of a charismatic spiritual leader who helped bring down Communism, renewed the life of the Church, greatly impacted youth worldwide with love for Christ, and a Pope who reached out to other religions and world leaders with a message of peace and love. Also stars Raoul Bova (Saint Francis), Michele Placido (Padre Pio: Between Heaven and Earth) and Adriana Asti as Mother Teresa. The beautiful film score is by legendary film composer Ennio Morricone.

This DVD contains the following subtitles;Spanish and English
16 page booklet by Carl Olson with study questions, biography of Pope John Paul II, and resource list.

A JOY TO WATCH5
I ordered this film from Canada because you can't get the second part in the UK and it was totally worth while. The Pope, The man is wonderful and a little more accurate than A Man Who became Pope which took liberties with the early part of JP's life. I was profoundly moved by many aspects of both films-I will treasure this DVD.

Both films are a beautiful, moving tribute to a man who taught love and practiced what he preached. I think they are wonderfully acted by the title roles- I cannot recommend them highly enough. Pope Benedict himself gave them a favourable review but you don't need to be Catholic, Christian or even religious to recognise the goodness of JPII and see the gift he had with people- especially youth.

This film captures the essence of who Karol was and what motivated him in a time of oppression and fear. It puts the message of John Paul's papacy 'DO NOT BE AFRAID' into a new light when you see how hard he must have struggled not to let fear conquer him in his life.

In 'KAROL; THE POPE, THE MAN' the actors reprise their roles - Piotr Adamczyk is utterly superb in portraying the Pope to the point of his death. This young actor really does deserve praise. Together these are truly great films that inspire and uplift like the man himself.

I hope as many people as possible get the chance to enjoy them

An inspiring film....suggesting that ALL religions focus upon their similarities and NOT their differences...5
This film ran on Bill Moyers Journal on 26 Dec. 2008...a remarkable film that focuses upon the idea that religion(s) and mankind should make an effort to realize that all religions and peoples have much in common, and good reason to explore the positive likes and ignore the negative dislikes that cause wars and so very much suffering. The world would certainly be a much better, more positive place if this could be put into practice.

Disappointing main event but the rest are great5
Anderson "The Spider" Silva returns to fight Patrick "The Predator" Cote in a Middleweight championship fight. Silva is on a 7 fight win streak going into this fight and Cote is on a 4 fight win streak. This was the most disappointing fight of the night because of how it ended. I won't hide anything in this review. Silva and Cote battle it out for 2 rounds in which ends up being Silva's longest fight in the Octagon. In the opening minute of the 3rd round, Cote injures his leg and Silva wins via tko (injury). Not only was the ending disappointing, but Silva's performance was also. For the most part, he just danced around for 2 rounds and showed off. I came to see a fight, not a dance.

There were 2 really great fights before this though. Alves fights late replacement for Diego Sanchez, Josh Koscheck. Alves was coming off 2 huge knockout wins over Parisyan and Hughes and was considered #1 contender for the belt after Fitch. The fight was a great 3 round battle that had me on the edge of my seat. The second good fight was Sean Sherk vs Tyson Griffin. Sherk was coming off the loss to BJ Penn but nothing held him back from earning Fight of the Night honors and fight of the year award for this fight. Tyson Griffin also looked impressive in this fight and delivers all he's got for 3 grueling rounds.

This event is also worth purchasing to see a huge upset with Werdum vs Black House student Junior Dos Santos. This was a brutal knockout that no one saw coming. Almost as surprising as Evans vs Liddell.

The Gray Maynard vs Rich Clementi fight was a dud and I kind of expected it to be.

This ain't just another Rose Bowl win5
This rules, end of story. The Rose Bowl is one of the coolest traditions ever, and this also caps off our 3rd straight Rose Bowl win (we have played four in a row, but lost to Texas in 2006).

Hands down, this game rules. Joe Paterno's excellent Nittany Lions team made Sanchez's performance even greater, as their high ranked defense was no match for Sanchez. Furthermore, Daryle Clarck was no match for Brian Cushing and Rey Maualuga. Yeah, classic DVD for a classic performace.

Far from great, but its okay3
This event featured some fights that had the potential to be really really awesome fights. The only one that is worth watching twice is the Paul Taylor vs Chris Lytle fight. That fight was awesome!

Too bad it set us up for a long night of poor performances and decisions. Luiz Cane vs Sokoudjou was a pretty good fight but Soko just looked like crap(I guess Cane is just that good though). Vera vs Jardine let everyone down in so many ways. Basically you got 2 guys coming off bad performances, Jardine with his highlight of Wanderlei Silva knocking him out cold and Vera coming off a lackluster win over Reese Andy and 2 losses to Tim Sylvia/Fabricio Werdum. So you would think both this guys would come out and try to prove something that they are still here to stay and are better then ever(and they even said it in the pre-fight interviews)....well this fight showed everything but that. I don't see either of these guys getting anywhere near the belt.

UFC 89 features a main event between Michael Bisping and Chris Leben. Bisping, coming off 2 big wins at his new weight class(middleweight) looks to take out Chris The Crippler Leben. Not the greatest of main events, probably shouldn't even have been a co-main event, but it was live in his hometown in England so the UFC tried to make them happy I guess.

Pre-lims include:
Welterweight bout: Akihiro Gono vs. Dan Hardy
Heavyweight bout: Shane Carwin vs. Neil Wain
Lightweight bout: Jess Liaudin vs. David Bielkheden
Lightweight bout: Sam Stout vs. Terry Etim
Lightweight bout: David Baron vs. Jim Miller

CyclopsCyclops

Directed by Declan O'Brien
Average customer review:

It is the pinnacle of the Roman Empire, a time of mighty gladiators, lusty women, and a ferocious one - eyed monster that slaughters those foolish enough to enter his forest domain. But the corrupt Emperor Tiberius has a plan to please the bloodlust of the people: Capture the creature and unleash him in the arena against his condemned slaves, including wrongfully imporisoned general Marcus Romulus. Now the ultimate battle between man and beast is about to begin... and Rome will tase the full furty of hell unleashed.

Customer Reviews

Cyclops-a great flick5

Take a journey back in time, when Cyclops ruled the land. Roman citizens were not safe, herds were randomly decimated, and fear reined supreme...that is, until the great Caesar himself rid the land of the dangerous creatures!

Except for one. The last Cyclops roams the forested area around Rome, dining on unsuspecting thieves and brigands. A hungry trio spies a drying rack of wool, and pays for their dishonesty with their lives. Cyclops rips through two men, leaving one behind to warn the Emperor Tiberius. Corruption runs rampant through the Roman empire, and Tiberius, with his maniacal pattern of decision making and ambition, has run the gauntlet until his only the most violent `victory' games will do. He sends Marcus Romulus to capture Cyclops for use in the games. An enraged Cyclops kills many of the troops, yet Marcus emerges as a hero, inciting the jealousy of the Emperors' nephew. Popularity is no weapon against blind ambition, and the victory games pit man against Cyclops, friend against friend, and ultimately, freedom against tyranny!
This is one amazing movie. The CGI employed on Cyclops is remarkable, just as the costuming/props used on the Centurions is. A picturesque digital reconstruction of Rome serves as a suitable backdrop for this freedom motivated film. If there is any problem with the production, it is the Victory games pit used. I am not sure that an Emperor as fanatical as Tiberius is depicted as would settle for a small arena, but it does work in the film very well. Another realistic element is that of the format of the games with small side battles climaxing in a major brawl. The background element of the slaves being used in the games instead of building the nephews' villa addition is also factual. In times of war, households were cleaned out of slaves for war efforts and `freely' given when any Emperor demanded it.

The casting of Eric Roberts as Tiberius is excellent, while Kevin Stapleton as the imprisoned General is a good foil. Roberts gives a performance that reminds me of the BBC I, Claudius strongly. Stapleton is rugged, and is a fitting Roman centurion.

Roger Corman gives us a film that is a good addition to any sand and sandal collection. Great DVD jacket too!

One of the Best Anime series of all time.5
I own the collector's edition of the original series on regular dvd and I'm not sure yet if its worth getting the new one. Anime is a weird thign to put on blu-ray because it doesn't suffer from the contrast and lighting issues that plague most movies. The sound can be easily bumped up in quality to either 5.1 or 7.1 dolby surround, if thats important to you. I just don't feel that most anime does any better on blu-ray than it does in upconversion.

If you do not own this set yet however and own a blu-ray player, this is a very reasonable price for such an incredible anime series. Being a remake of a classic cultural story from Japan, its already steeped in history, but the reimagining of the series and book is just incredible. I've never fallen in love with a main character like I did in this story. He is simply one of the most tough-A-$-$-ed anime samurai you will ever meet and he is everything that epitomizes the samurai code. The story features many characters that are believable, well developed, and consistent as well as great themes that still hold true today in many respects. Whether your in for the story or the action, it doesn't matter, its worth it on both counts.

The animation technique is much liek Burst Angel or the Karas movies in that they combine some cg elements with the anime to create some jaw-droppping scenes which include sword-wielding tough-guys taking down gigantic machines in ways you never thought possible. Far-fetched? Sure, but its some of the most fun I've ever had escaping into an anime world. I highly recommend this series to anime lovers everywhere.

Zulu (1964]) [Blu-ray]Zulu (1964]) [Blu-ray]

Directed by Cy Endfield
Average customer review:

Import Blu-Ray/Region All pressing.

Narrated by Richard Burton and starring an outstanding Michael Caine in his first starring role, Zulu is a tense and dramatic war film about the Battle of Rorke's Drift in 1879--which was part of the Anglo-Zulu War in South Africa--where approximately 150 British soldiers held off 4,000 Zulu warriors. Zulu is an exceptionally well-made and beautifully shot film from 1964 that demonstrates the bravery of the British troops and also acknowledges the Zulu's bravery. The emotional score of the film was conducted by John Barry. Eleven Victoria Crosses were won in the action, the most in a single battle. Most of the characters in the movie were based on real participants of the battle.

I ordered this from Britain when it first came out and can confirm that it will work fine on US players. I can also confirm that it looks and sounds great. Chris & Don. A Love StoryChris & Don. A Love Story

Directed by Guido Santi;Tina Mascara
Average customer review:

Chris & Don: A Love Story is the true-life story of the passionate three-decade relationship between British writer Christopher Isherwood (whose Berlin Stories was the basis for the beloved Cabaret) and American portrait painter Don Bachardy, thirty years his junior. From Isherwood's Kit-Kat-Club years in Weimar-era Germany to the couple's first meeting on the sun-kissed beaches of 1950s Malibu, their against-all-odds saga is brought to dazzling life through beautiful, rare home movies and reminiscences from Don and many of their friends, including Leslie Caron and Liza Minnelli. With Isherwood's exemplary status as an out-and-proud gay hero, and Bachardy's eventual artistic triumph away from the considerable shadow of his life partner, Chris & Don: A Love Story is above all a joyful celebration of a most extraordinary couple.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
- 16:9 anamorphic transfer, formatted for widescreen televisions
- More of Chris and Don's home movies, including footage from the sets of The Rose Tattoo (1955) and King Vidor's War and Peace (1956)
- Deleted sequences with Don Bachardy, including an interview on gay marriage
- Deleted interviews with actress Gloria Stuart (Titanic), filmmaker John Boorman (Point Blank), and actress Leslie Caron (Gigi)
- "Don on Chris": An 8-page printed monograph of Bachardy's paintings of Isherwood
- U.S. theatrical trailer
- Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hearing impaired
- Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks

Chris and Don: A Love Story -- Nay, not Humbert Humbert at all5
On February 14, 1953, Don Bachardy (18) meets his brother's lover Christopher Isherwood (48) on a beach in California and, unbeknownst to both parties, are locked in for life -- a life that would enlarge into creative soars for a portrait artist yet to know his calling and an established author awaiting his eternal subject. Yet Chris and Don: A Love Story is not simply about the ungovernable urge to create the life of art that only artists can know where often the object is art itself; it is more humbly about two lovers' bone-deep adamancy to preserve as much of life as one can in a durable yet aesthetic medium. Here, the intended substance is not the piece drawn nor the word written but the protraction of human essence by embalming it in text, in sketch. The documentary, much like its own subjects, is the act of reinforcing memory with creative proofs -- the body of evidence, which, in the process of its production, inspires more memories than any paper or celluloid can hold. A sketch of a gnarled Chris, haggard in his cancerous boniness, opens the smell of the author, the smell of the ink-then in the ink-now, and the taste of that morning in this morning. It is a story of an artist drawing an author while the author simultaneously writes his muse into immortality.

Amid this Edenic coalescence breathes the quiet defiance of a ritual-weary, mid-aged Chris Isherwood against societal prescriptions for public, age-aware heteronormativity. What could have been (and was) perceived as Isherwood's Humbert Humbertish captivity of the sun-sinewed boy-Lolita is now cited as one of the primary prompters in the gay liberation canon. Yet Humbert Humbertish it all was in many ways as brutally young Don, calling himself "an unconscious impersonator," willingly and star-struckly serves as Chris' substrate, replicating his accent, his Cheshire mannerism, and sparse diction. Eclipsed by Chris' deserved superluminosity and commensurate clout, Don confesses, "I wanted people to like me for who I really was but I wasn't sure myself who I was. The only thing I knew that I was good at was drawing people..." And draw he did, and with it came the urge to break free from the only lover he had known. Chris' enabling of Don's art pushes the latter to gauge the cost of unequal sexual experience with a seasoned, three-decade-distant partner. All Chris wants is for Don to come home at the end of the day after his shenanigans. Which he does in the late 60's. (Sometimes.)

Like Paulie Bleeker for Juno MacGuff, Chris Isherwood is the cheese to Don Bachardy's macaroni. Don comes back for good and draws Chris, and Chris only in the last few days of his life, chronicling the coming of his death piecemeal in a preemptively elegiac set of sketches. Chris Isherwood bares his all, his full, bleak nakedness in sacred singularity with his scribe. For Don's furious fingers, each tender stroke is a prayer for bonus time. Chris dies; Don spends the day drawing his corpse lest memory alone betray. There is everything lyrical about these last soul-jolting images of depleted youth, the shameful shriveling of the body, the kind of lovely grotesqueness that only death has. Guido Santi and Tina Mascara cleverly juxtapose them against a lithe yet withered Don's feverish workouts at the gym, and close the story with the artist in his solitary atelier where all that is left are drawers of pictures and shelves of books in poetic time-still, all the company a man has shored for a night to allay "the foul rag and boneshop of the heart."

The Last House on the LeftThe Last House on the Left

Directed by Wes Craven
Average customer review:

Future Nightmare creator and Scream weaver Wes Craven's film debut is a primitive little production that rises above its cut-rate production values and hazy, grainy patina via its grimly affecting portrait of human evil infiltrating a middle-class household. The story is adapted from Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring, but the film has more in common with Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs as it charts the descent of a harmless married couple into methodical killers. A quartet of criminals--a distorted version of the nuclear family--kidnaps a pair of teenage girls and proceeds to ravage, rape, torture, and finally brutally murder them in the woods, unwittingly within walking distance of their rural home. The killers take refuge in the girls' own home, but when the parents discover just who they are and what they've done, they plot violent retribution.

Along with George Romero's Night of the Living Dead and Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Craven helped redefine American horror with this debut--all three movies portray modern society crumbling into madness and horror. But, unlike his fellow directors, Craven gives his film an uncomfortable verisimilitude, setting it squarely in the heartland of modern America. While at times it's awkward and inconsistent, with distracting comic interludes, his handling of the brutal horror scenes is unsettling, and the death of the daughter is an unexpectedly quiet and lyrical moment. --Sean Axmaker

A Disturbing Look into Rape, Murder, and Revenge5
Although I've seen this years ago, I thought I'd give my 2 cents worth since the remake will soon be released.

"The Last House on the Left," was probably the first rape film I ever saw and although it is low budget. There are scenes in this movie that makes you sympathize for the characters, such as the self urination scene and the scene where the two girls are forced to have sex with one another. I believe those scenes struck me harder then the actual rape and murder.

When these rapist find themselves at Mary's home, I actually found myself rooting the parents on, hoping they would find out what had been done to their daughter, and of course they figure it out.

The revenge in this movie is great, especially with the castration and the chainsaw wailing father. Due to the explicit nature of this film it is a cult classic that will always be known as perhaps one of the most brutal rape/revenge movies ever.

If you have yet to see "Last House" buy it, but guys I wouldn't suggest showing this on the first date to your girl, unless she likes to see multiple rape and disembowelment. In all honesty this movie could be used as a party movie as well, there are quite a few scenes regarding dry wit humor, and plenty of blood soaked sequences that would make the strongest flinch.

At The Top Of Their Game5
If you're looking for a concert video that captures The Who at the peak of their talents, this one is it. The year is 1970. Pete Townshend still looks like himself (not that I have anything against Pete as an old fart, but, you know ...). He still had hair, and lots of it. His energy is infectious. His jumps and splits are perfectly timed. In fact, he strikes an exciting balance during this concert between The Who that was and The Who that would be. The windmill guitar strokes are eternal, of course. But Pete also employs "the birdman dance" here (you'll just have to see it) -- a move used in the band's early incarnation which disappeared in the 70's. So at The Isle of Wight you still see the last gasps of The Who's early stage act alongside the "Tommy era" look and act that would prevail for nearly a decade. Townshend's guitar work, as usual, is brilliant and pulse-raising. Roger's voice is in great shape. His phrasing is near perfect. He's in full "rock god" mode with his open leather vest and lion-like locks. He struts and marches across the stage with confidence and youthful energy. John Entwhistle (still alive) provides the awesome anchor for the hurricane that this band's live presentation is. His only wild statement is one killer skeleton suit. His bass licks are inimitable. And Moonie? What can I say? He's alive. (Hard to believe he'll meet his Maker in eight short years). He's loony. And he's one fast, skillful, and exciting maniac on the drums. His sense of humor is on full display, too. The band's playing that night so long ago was, in a word: tight. I mean, these four young guys were playing off each other perfectly. Young enough to release immense kinetic energy, experienced enough to play with a high level of musicianship. Like I said, it's the perfect moment in their history to capture them on film.

The DVD quality is excellent considering this concert took place in the increasingly distant past (although 1970 seems just like yesterday to me -- I'm an old fart, too -- but not boring!). Sound quality is very good. And somehow (and this is the most magical part for me) you actually get the sense, because of the way it was originally filmed, that you're actually at the show. For me it's like a time machine deposited me in a crowd of long-haired Brits flashing peace signs in 1970; and there's The Who, onstage just a few yards (or meters if you prefer) in front of me. Watching this disc is the next best thing to being at a Who concert back in the day.

In the end, though, it's worth it to buy this DVD just to hear a cocky Townshend address the crowd with tongue firmly in cheek: ""SMILE, you buggers! Pretend it's Christmas!" A must have for any Who fan.

Touching and moving5
This film is just so touching. I watched it twice on MSNBC. At first I wasn't sure what it was but I couldn't stop watching. I cried all the way through. He details the failures in such a clear way, making you think, "Why couldn't they save this family?"

The twist is shocking and left me sitting in shock for the rest of the film. I was headed to bed when it came on and I stay up for two hours watching it. It was just that good.

Really, have a box of tissues handy. This was a travesty but this film is beautiful!

What Just Happened?

What Just Happened?

From Magnolia
Average customer review:

Somebody once dubbed Hollywood "the Dream Factory"; What Just Happened aims to make sad, occasionally zany comedy of the proposition that unreality is the keynote of Hollywood as place, process, and lifestyle. Art Linson wrote it, and as producer of The Untouchables, Fight Club, Heat, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, et numerous al., he must know the territory. Trouble is, after Robert Altman's way-superior The Player (1992), several seasons of Entourage, and wraparound entertainment coverage on cable TV and the Internet, most of What Just Happened feels secondhand and superfluous. Robert De Niro gives a low-key comic performance as Ben, a seasoned producer being relegated to the edge of Tinseltown's Big Picture. The test screening of his latest movie was a disaster because his arty Cockney director (Michael Wincott, savoring a rare comic opportunity) insists on killing off not only hero Sean Penn but also, unforgivably, his dog. And Ben's next movie may not get made at all because Bruce Willis is adamant about playing his part with an outlandish beard the studio won't stand for. Meanwhile, our beleaguered protagonist is living in a soulless plastic-and-chrome apartment while supporting two ex-wives in their respective Houses Beautiful. The second wife (Robin Wright Penn) has lined up a divorce counselor to help them get on with their separate lives, even as Ben yearns for reconciliation.

What Just Happened re-teams De Niro with director Barry Levinson eleven years after Wag the Dog (1997), their surreal black comedy about Hollywood and Washington, different kinds of dream factory, collaborating on a politically expedient fiction and an unnecessary war. Nothing comparable is at stake here--though at one point studio boss Catherine Keener does evoke memories of President Lyndon Johnson issuing directives while perched on the commode. There are funny bits and deft touches from such redoubtable troupers as John Turturro--playing an agent terrified of talking to his clients--and Stanley Tucci, as a screenwriter who may be moving in on that wife Ben hopes to win back. However, Levinson's direction is so lackadaisical, there's barely a moment that doesn't nudge the whole enterprise toward the direct-to-video bin. --Richard T. Jameson

Customer Reviews

A Producer's Life4
Written by producer Art Linson (THE UNTOUCHABLES) and directed by Barry Levinson (WAG THE DOG), WHAT JUST HAPPENED is a dark comedy that takes a realistic look at the tenuous life of a Hollywood film producer.

Somebody once said that a producer will "sell his soul" in order to get his movie made, and this clever film seems be bear that premise out.

Robert DeNiro plays a "powerful" producer whose "power" is hanging by a slender thread. Not only did his latest film have a disastrous test screening, but Bruce Willis (playing himself), the star of his next film, is refusing to shave his bushy beard for the movie, which might result in the entire project being cancelled.

Though he's dealing with three children from two ex-wives, one of which (Robin Wright Penn) he still loves, DeNiro's job is to juggle his personal and professional lives and keep everybody happy. Studio head Catherine Keener insists that the recently previewed movie be re-cut, so the studio will only lose $15 million on it, instead of $25 million. Now, DeNiro must coax his unstable director (Michael Wincott) into making the changes before the movie has its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

He also has to deal with Bruce Willis' timid agent (John Turturro) and get the representative to force his client into shaving the beard. Willis, incidentally, seems to be having a ball spoofing himself, particularly in a scene in which he destroys the costuming department while throwing a temper tantrum.

In his personal life, DeNiro discovers that Wright is sleeping with married writer Stanley Tucci, and that his teenage daughter had been having an affair with a much older agent who has just committed suicide.

I really enjoyed this smart, often laugh-out-loud, comedy, but the fact is that this film will probably appeal more to industry "insiders," rather than the general public. You really have to know the picture business in order to truly enjoy this movie's humor.

Sean Penn (as himself) and Kristen Stewart co-star.

Sex DriveSex Drive

Directed by Sean Anders
Average customer review:

Sooner or later, the new breed of coming-of-age comedy (good ones like Superbad, not-so-good ones like College) had to inspire a parody of itself, and that self-conscious knock-off is the sporadically funny Sex Drive. A road movie about a virginal nice guy, Ian (John Zuckerman), who drives cross-country in his brother's car to score with a girl he met online, Sex Drive sounds like just another teen farce. But it isn't, exactly: with stops in a rockin' Amish community, in the redneck house of a bathroom fetishist, and in Ian's own family home (where a well-meaning new stepmother is continually exposed to Ian's unsavory private life), the film has an original life of its own. Casting counts for a lot in this movie. Clark Duke plays the likeable, over-confident nebbish we've come to expect since meeting McLovin' in Superbad, and Amanda Crew is Felicia, Ian's best friend and obvious romantic destiny (once these crazy kids figure that out). The three of them go traveling together in search of Ian's sure thing. But Sex Drive really becomes a much better comedy once Seth Green appears (as an Amish guy steeped in guilt-tripping sarcasm) and James Marsden (as Ian's bullying, homophobic brother) lets loose with a very funny performance. The two of them, really, have never been better on screen. There are a number of noteworthy scenes, particularly a chaotic climax that brings most of the characters together for an unexpected finish. Sex Drive, in some ways, is a more inspired movie than some of the ones it lampoons. --Tom Keogh

Older Generations quit whining 5
I've heard a lot of criticism about this movie saying, "oh it's not original" "we've seen this before" and then they go to compare it to some OLD 80s Teen Comedy. Heck, even comparing it to a 90s teen comedy wouldn't be fair.

My point is that the teens comedies are meant to strike at well... Teens of today... not teens of 20 or 10 years ago.

See... if I watch a teen comedy of the 80s... there's no WAY i can relate to those fads BUT i can relate to the common teen themes of exploration. Which is exactly what Sex Drive does. Yes it does have similarities to old teen films but it places them in more recent times.

Overall this film was great and it had a lot of heart. It annoys me that people who grew up watching 90s and 80s teen comedy's give it low ratings when it is meant for younger audiences that have probably never seen those old comedies and even if they did, would not be able to relate to them.

The French Connection [Blu-ray]The French Connection [Blu-ray]

Directed by William Friedkin
Average customer review:

William Friedkin's classic policier was propelled to box-office glory, and a fistful of Oscars, in 1972 by its pedal-to-the-metal filmmaking and fashionably cynical attitude toward law enforcement. Gene Hackman's Popeye Doyle, a brutally pushy New York City narcotics detective, is a dauntless crime fighter and Vietnam-era "pig," a reckless vulgarian whose antics get innocent people killed. Loosely based upon an actual investigation that led to what was then the biggest heroin seizure in U.S. history, the picture traces the efforts of Doyle and his partner (Roy Scheider) to close the pipeline pumping Middle Eastern smack into the States through the French port of Marseilles. (The actual French Connection cops, Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, make cameo appearances.) It was widely recognized at the time that Friedkin had lifted a lot of his high-strung technique from the Costa-Gavras thrillers The Sleeping Car Murders and Z--he even imported one of Costa-Gavras's favorite thugs, Marcel Bozzuffi, to play the Euro-trash hit man plugged by Doyle in an elevated train station. There was an impressive official sequel in 1975, French Connection II, directed by John Frankenheimer, which took Popeye to the south of France and got him hooked on horse. A couple of semi-official spinoffs followed, The Seven-Ups, which elevated Scheider to the leading role, and Badge 373, with Robert Duvall stepping in as the pugnacious flatfoot. --David Chute

"The Lair": Season Two

Going Where Few Shows Go

Amos Lassen

"The Lair" is Here TV!'s hit show that entered its second season this year. What the show deals with is that the bodies of nameless young men turned up dead with terrible neck wounds. The trail of bodies lead an ambitious young journalist to a private men's club named "The Lair". It seems that those that frequent the club are an attractive group of vampires who want to test the limits of the flesh and season two continues to try to answer the unanswered questions about the club and its membership.
When we left season one, Damian was in prison and Colin seized control of "The Lair". Ian, a stranger who was hitch-hiking becomes friends with a guy and the consequences are alarming. Meanwhile, our journalist, Thom, receives a visit in spirit form from Damian as he attempts to free himself from prison. Almost simultaneously, Dr. Jake Waldman receives a strange plant which he wants to use for an unorthodox experiment. Suddenly Thom's ex-boyfriend, Richie, reappears and this causes Damian to threaten Thom and Jake's plant brings about a strange influence over him and he becomes increasingly possessed by the plant, a Lumina Orchis, and this causes Thom to begin to worry about him. Colin also begins his search for new victims. As the plant becomes a force to be dealt with, it kills the evil Mr. Spivey who breaks into Jake's house. The sheriff Trout finds Spivey's body and things get quite heavy as the plant and the vampires gain power.
There are several new faces in season two including one famous porn star in a non-porn role. Evil continues to operate and all evidence seems to point to unhealthy activities going on at the club.

A lost Argento classic finally gets released!.5
Four Flies on Grey Velvet was one of Dario Argento's lost gems, and I'm really glad they finally released this great and obscure giallo flick on DVD. Four Flies on Grey Velvet was Argento's third and final entry in his fine trilogy of animal-themed giallo thrillers. Four Flies is one of the better films of the trilogy, second only to Argento's great debut film Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970). The film is classic Argento that flourishes with a beautiful visual style. It has an intriguing storyline with plenty of tight suspense sequences, bizarre atmosphere and a rather dark sense of humor (check out the over the top homosexual detective or the dimwit mailman). The mystery element is kept quite high too and Ennio Morricone's lovely music score is also a great addition and really complements the rest of the film. Roberto played by Michael Brandon is a young and talented rock drummer playing in a band alongside his friends. For the last week he has a guy with a fancy suit and dark sunglasses stalking him for no apparent reason. When Roberto accidentally kills the guy during the inevitable confrontation, it suddenly becomes clear that someone entirely different intends to frame him as the accidental murder is captured on film. From then on, a guy wearing a strange mask threatens and blackmails Roberto as well as his wife Nina (Mimsy Farmer). Soon after, Roberto is plagued by gruesome nightmares and a cold fear of dread. Attacked in his own home by the mysterious and masked stranger, Roberto is further tortured when his maid is brutally killed. Based on a story by Argento (who scripted), Luigi Cozzi and Mario Foglietti, this is abit slow going at times but has enough twists and turns to keep giallo fans interested for the most part. As expected there are lots of stylish sequences, some great camerawork and some interesting camera placements (including one inside a guitar), what was really unexpected about this film though was the use of comedy in a couple of scenes through out the film while sometimes this would work, occasionally it just would be a nuisance and distract you from the real plot, don't get me wrong though this was an excellent giallo flick and was quite thrilling with some awesome and suspenseful moments, it was definitely different from his other films but also quite unique. Most of the performances are decent enough with Mimsy Farmer being the highlight, she was the best actress in the whole cast as she was very believable and memorable in her role, she did a great job along with Michael Brandon. Another supporting role is played by none other than the a**-kicking cult actor/comedian Bud Spencer! The superb score by maestro Ennio Morricone is one more reason to watch this film. Dario Argento is one of my all-time favorite directors while this wasn't my favorite of his (I still prefer Tenebre and Susperia) I still loved it. There was some blood and gore but it wasn't too violent except for a few bloody stabbings and two decapitations it wasn't that that gory, you can tell that from this film Dario was preparing himself for his true masterpiece Deep Red and there were some similar shots that were used in this film as well like the opening of the red curtains and there were some other similar stylistic shots here and there. I'm a longtime Argento fan and so when I heard about Four Flies finally getting a proper DVD release I was ecstatic, I just couldn't believe it. This turned out to be just as good as I hoped it would. It was definitely worth watching and should not be missed, I highly recommend this to all my fellow Italian horror fans.

Vanishing Point [Blu-ray]Vanishing Point [Blu-ray]

Directed by Richard C. Sarafian
Average customer review:

Art film and road movie collide for Vanishing Point, an existential car chase across the desert in a post Easy Rider America. Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, a taciturn driver who bets that he can drive a new Dodge Challenger from Denver to San Francisco in 15 hours. He loads up on amphetamines and begins his odyssey through the contemporary west while a funky black DJ (Cleavon Little) turns the driver into a folk hero and broadcasts advice on dodging the cops. It's like a counterculture precursor to Smokey and the Bandit, with the road as the last bastion of freedom and the DJ as a combination commentator and mystical guide. The slim plot offers a network of society drop-outs that aid the "last free Man on Earth" (as the DJ describes him) on his obscure but obviously symbolic quest while flashbacks paint Kowalski as a world-weary hero. It doesn't really make much sense, but the amazing car chases and excellent stunt work are stunningly set against the American west, beautifully captured by cinematographer John A. Alonzo. Vanishing Point is most assuredly a product of its time, the heady, anything-goes era of rebellion in the early 1970s. --Sean Axmaker
